Gr 2-4--These series entries present information on the selection and care of pets through first-person narratives. In Cats, a nine-year-old girl adopts two kittens from a shelter. Text and color photographs follow their development from adoption to adulthood. In Hamster & Gerbils, a fourth-grade boy tells of his experiences with his hamster both at home and in his classroom where it resides during the school year. Real-life situations occur in both titles, such as not all family members wanting a pet, classroom concerns when the hamster escapes, and the expression of feelings regarding the everyday routines and responsibilities of pet care. Both books are written in conversational language. Fact pages reinforce the information found within the texts, and both are well documented. A resource section includes names and addresses of such associations as the Human Society, an up-to-date list for further reading, and a thorough index. These titles do not replace such quality pet care books as the "ASPCA Pet Care Guides for Kids" series (DK). However, pet owners should enjoy relating to these youngsters.

Review for My pet Hamster & Gerbil,
By A Customer
This review is from: My Pet Hamster and Gerbils (All about Pets) (Hardcover)
My pet Hamster & Gerbils is a book with neccesary facts and tips about raising Hamsters and Gerbils. Although this book is written with information off a fourth grade kid, it gives it in an understandable way, easy for children to read. Not only does it tell you how to care for these animals but tells the history and interesting facts. The pictures in the book are wonderful. I really love the photography done. It persuades you to buy a hamster or gerbil.
