I've gotta say that this little gadget made my 11 year old strangely happy. He's a little nature lover and was thrilled to get this very inexpensive gift. Of all of his birthday gifts, he singled this one out as the most used. He spends long periods of time practicing calling birds and is excited when one responds. This product has stood up to neglectful boy abuse (left outside, stepped on....etc) It keeps on working and looks the same as when we got it. I only wish that the instructions had included directions on how to oil it if and when the squeak should go out. So far after 6 months of use and abuse it is going strong! I will warn parents that these little stinkers can give off a piercing tweet and kids will have problems remembering to use them only outside!

I bought one impulsively once I had seen these to mess with my cat and to mess around with birds while I'm relaxing on my patio. It's winter now so I haven't had a chance to try to call any birds since I live in North Dakota but cant wait until spring for them to return. I'm pretty confident that it'll catch their attention and they might show up out of curiosity, I think it sounds like a bird and I have it hanging on my key chain so I'm constantly messing around with it. When my cats around and he hears it he starts looking and wandering around looking for a bird. I think it's a neat toy for the money.

I'm an amateur concert percussionist, and I needed a chirping bird sound effect for a concert (pastoral introduction to the William Tell Overture; think classic Warner Bros. cartoons.) I found a YouTube clip which demonstrated the sound that this little widget makes. It fit the bill. All you do is twist the handle back and forth, and friction with the wooden parts and resin powder makes the sound.

Would it fool a real bird? Dunno. Is it a clever little device for less than $10? Yes.

It's small and easy to use, just twist the handle. I tried it to attract songbirds who sometimes gather in the tree outside the kitchen window. The chirping sounds are pretty clear and the birds seem to be looking around, but not overly interested in making conversation.

The first time I saw one of these I was on a photography trip with two Ornithologists, these guys could imitate so many birds with this that I had to buy one for myself.
100% recommended if you want to get up close to curious birds.

It's fun to use, and it works. I had one of these as a kid, but never did much with it because I thought I had to imitate the birds I wanted to attract. Actually all you have to do is make birdlike noises and you'll often get a response.

I'm giving this three stars because when I opened the package that this came in (the outside envelope), I immediately noticed that there was brown dust like material all over in the bubble with the Bird call thing. I assumed the resin came separately to use when needed. What appears to have happened is that there was a crack in the capsule that the rosin came in (which was shoved inside the round metal circle thing on the bird call) and because of the crack in the capsule, the rosin had emptied out all inside the bubble, smeared all inside the packaging (and the bird call itself) during shipment inside the bubble compartment. As careful as I was, much of the rosin was unable to be saved for later. Not a problem now, but I guess it will be when I need to put rosin on the thing when needed. I have very little of it left. The bird call thing works and seems pretty cool. I'm just worried about when that rosin stuff wears off. I have to research how to get more I guess. Probably cheaper to buy another bird call thing.

I have owned one of these calls for more than thirty years and as a birdwatcher, have found it helpful in bringing my elusive subjects into range of my camera lens. That said, you will not be able to make credible bird calls unless you are willing to practice, practice, practice just as you would with a musical instrument. The need to re-rosin will depend on the frequency of use and the average humidity in your area. On the negative side, the rosin is not readily obtainable if you run out or misplace it. You may wind up having to buy another call just to resupply yourself with rosin, but surely you know someone who would like the spare!
