Book Description

July 1, 2001
Here is the first comprehensive review of a survival issue that touches the lives of a majority of Americans -- but hasn't won as much of our active concern as it deserves. Nearly six out of ten U.S. households own at least one dog or cat. As the new century began, over 130,000,000 pets were sharing our lives. Yet every year an estimated 5,000,000 shelter orphans -- healthy, lovable young animals who would make happy and devoted pets -- are doomed to premature death simply for want of sufficient homes.

What can all of us who keep and care about companion animals do to save those "surplus" lives? A great deal. But until now there's been no single, accessible source to enlighten America's pet-owning public on the many large and small ways we can help. This informal and inclusive guide, written by a fellow pet owner with no institutional affiliation, focuses on three prime areas in which thoughtful dog and cat lovers can make a dramatic difference: how we acquire our pets; how scrupulously we manage their birth control; and -- perhaps most important today -- how committed we are to keeping them with us for life.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"An excellent publication for...the general public. Encouraging private citizens to become effective armchair activists. An eye-opener..." -- ANIMAL SHELTERING, March-April 2002, magazine published by The Humane Society of the United States

"As well-researched and readable a text as you could hope to find on this subject. Also full of surprises." -- ASPCA ANIMAL WATCH, Winter 2002

"If they are willing to read, save your breath and give them Susan Seidman's new book. Full of interesting information." -- SPAY/USA Network News, Autumn 2001, review by Esther Mechler, Director

"Public policy could be based on her numbers. Her writing style is lucid, her experiences both typical and revealing." -- ANIMAL PEOPLE, October 2002

"To help animals, this book provides a clear and concise path towards making a difference. Seidman does a remarkable job." -- American Humane Association

More About the Author

Susan M. Seidman has worked independently since 1978 as a freelance
journalist and advertising consultant. Earlier, she was a senior editor with the Foreign Policy Association, a direct-mail copywriter with American Heritage Publishing Company, and the circulation promotion manager of Realites in America.

Although she has written professionally about gardening, travel, international affairs, vision handicaps and social trends, her chief interest has long been companion animals. Her articles have been published in CAT FANCY, MODERN MATURITY (now AARP THE MAGAZINE), CATS Magazine and other periodicals and newspapers.

Her book about shelter animals, THE PET SURPLUS: WHAT EVERY DOG AND CAT OWNER CAN DO TO HELP REDUCE IT (Xlibris, 2001), was widely praised by humane professionals; see review excerpts on Amazon's detail page for this title. Her new CAT COMPANIONS: A MEMOIR OF LOVING AND LEARNING (2011) focuses on the four generations of pets -- 21 felines in all -- she has welcomed and cherished in her own home over the years.

Ms. Seidman has done extensive volunteer work with humane societies and currently shares her Long Island home with three cats.
