4.0 out of 5 stars longest time it's ever taken me to like a cd
i absolutely loved counting blue cars when i heard it on the radio years ago. it was my favorite song ever for a while. so i finally got the cd. and i was disappointed. i have an open mind for music, and i listen to a cd at least 20 times until i have the total feel of it and can make a judgement. the only other song i liked (besides counting blue cars) was charlie...

3.0 out of 5 stars Pet Your Friends
I wasn't really into it when I first listened. I knew some other various Dishwalla songs (which I really liked) and of course I heard counting blue cars and loved it so I decided to pick this up. Anyway, as I was saying the first time I played it nothing but the song "give" stood out to me. After a few listens though I'd say it is pretty decent, and it gets better the...

i absolutely loved counting blue cars when i heard it on the radio years ago. it was my favorite song ever for a while. so i finally got the cd. and i was disappointed. i have an open mind for music, and i listen to a cd at least 20 times until i have the total feel of it and can make a judgement. the only other song i liked (besides counting blue cars) was charlie brown's parents (which i now think is the best song on the album). but i eventually started to love miss emma peel, too. but those were the only 3 songs i liked. i tried my hardest to like the rest of the album, but i could only sorta like the song give. so i gave up on the cd.

a few years later, just a few days ago, i decided to give the cd another try. and i liked haze, only for so long, and feeder's great. so i love most of the cd, and the rest of the cd ain't so bad. i'm no longer disappointed. it took years, though. this is the longest cd it's ever taken me to appreciate. it also took me over a year to like matchbox twenty's "mad season" and bush's "the science of things", which are both great.

pretty babies - 3/5 ok song.
haze - 4/5 just a good song.
counting blue cars - 5/5 i don't think i have to say anything.
explode - 2/5 eh. doesn't hit me. kinda boring.
charlie brown's parents - 5/5 wow. this is one of the best songs i've ever heard. so many different parts, awesome changes, and every part wonderful.
give - 5/5 awesome mellow song.
miss emma peel - 5/5 shoulda been on the radio.
moisture - 2/5 reminds me of virgos merlot. a bad virgos merlot song.
the feeder - 5/5 now you're down with the feeder!
all she can see - 2/5 this song woulda been better, if it were better.
only for so long - 4/5 cool.

i would have loved to give this cd a 5/5 cuz of all of the great songs, and i think dishwalla is one of the best sounding bands when the songs are good. but with the few songs that i don't like much, i think it's only fair to give it a 4/5. i would have given it a 4.5/5 if it was an option.

5.0 out of 5 stars a modern-rock classic, January 13, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Pet Your Friends (Audio CD)
Here's a classic example of the '90s "alternative" genre, complete with soaring vocals, driving guitars, and tight songwriting. All tracks on this CD are very good. My only complaint is that Dishwalla seem too tentative, too reluctant to go ahead and jam on some of these awesome riffs they wrote. There is often an inopportune tempo change or a reduction in intensity at the wrong point in the song ("Haze," "Charlie Brown's Parents") but perhaps the band overcame their inhibitions on their second CD, which I will definitely buy. Anyway, think Pearl Jam vocals over Catherine Wheel riffs--can't be bad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD, May 3, 2001

This review is from: Pet Your Friends (Audio CD)
I knew this was a band of significant talent and originality after hearing "Blue Cars" once on the radio, immediately after which, I bought the album. I was pleasantly surprised by the rest of the tracks, especially "Pretty Babies", "Miss Emma Peel" and "Charlie Brown's Parents". I found myself completely captivated by the power, complexity and unique quality of JR Richards' voice. It isn't very often that I'm impressed by alternative male rock voices, but this one is definitely a standout. The overall production is very satisfying to the ears and upper torso that bobs to the rock beats in the car speakers or home stereo system. I highly recommend this album.

I bought this CD years ago for their "hit", Counting Blue Cars. While a wonderful song, this is far from their best. The rest of the album absolutely rocks, with the tunes growing on you the more you listen to 'em. Complex and elaborate, yet extremely accessible. A MUST-HAVE CD FOR ANYONE'S COLLECTION. You will not be disappointed!

Best new band I've heard in years. You SHOULD get this disc. Counting Blue Cars is only the 3rd or 4th best song on the disc, that's how good it is!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Underrated., October 29, 2009

This review is from: Pet Your Friends (Audio CD)
This album honestly deserves more than 4 stars. Unfortunately, this does have four stars because of some generic no name customers with an unjustifable grudge against the band leaving some crappy one sentence review. I mean, really? With absolutley no effective elaboration on their reviews. This is some 90s alternative rock at its best. Old school Dishwalla. The guys definately deserve more credit than it's getting. There isn't a filler on the album. It's all very well crafted songmanship. Great riffs, reflective, interesting, and culture driven lyrics (Pretty Babies is a bit preachy, but still great). If you are a fan of 90's alt rock like Gin Blossoms, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Collective Soul, Dezeray's Hammer, Caroline's Spine, Spacehog, and Soul Asylum....then you have NO reason not to love this album. If you're strictly on R&B, teeny queen pop, death metal...then obviously you need to stay away from this. Otherwise, you need this fantastic album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very close to perfect...., August 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Pet Your Friends (Audio CD)
Alright, so the lyrics are a little strange. That is part of the overall charm of this disc. I have a very small list of cd's that i consider nearly perfect. This list only contains four cd's at this very moment, this is one of them. This cd is proof that there is some serious talent among the members of this band. There is only one song on the whole disc that i am not totally thrilled with, that is "Wasted Time". I am a true connoisseur of vocal talent, and there is just an overwhelming amount of screaming on that one track for me. I would be hard pressed to name my favorite track here, but if need be i would lean towards "Moisture". I'm sure i have listened to that one more frequently than any of the others. This isn't just your average metal/rock/alternative offering. In fact, i'm not really sure what category to put this in. One thing is for sure, these guys can really play their instruments and have come up with a very original sound. I very much recommend this cd to anyone with a true appreciation for talent. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW ! What a CD., December 15, 1998
By A Customer

Simply SUPERB. The music and J.R. Richards sends tingles down my spine. The lyrics are phenomenal ! My favourites are Haze, Give and Only For So Long. I've been listening to rock for over 25 years and the only other band to "hit" me like Dishwalla is Uriah Heep. The best album I've purchased in well over 10 years. WOW!

This review is from: Pet Your Friends (Audio CD)
It is really one of the best albums made. Every single song is
a jem. It touches the heart. I don't think I like their latest album Opaline too much, but this one is a must have. Filled with the most beautiful tunes I've ever heard. I get surprised everytime I put it into the cd player.

5.0 out of 5 stars More to Count on than just Blue Cars..., July 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Pet Your Friends (Audio CD)
An excellent CD! When I first heard it, I thought it pretty much sounded like everything else out there, but listening to it more and more made me realize how original their sound is. From the satire of "Pretty Babies" and the humor of "Miss Emma Peel" to the mysteriousness of "Moisture" and "Date With Sarah" (hidden track), this disc has it all. The whole band works together perfectly with each other to give the songs life. I'm looking forward very much to the follow up.
