The kit came with two brushes and a tube of toothpaste. I like the long handled brush the best, as the finger brush does not fit in my 10lb cat's mouth. The long handled brush has soft bristles and what appears to be silicone-like nubbles, and does not seem to bother my cat. Initially, I thought it, too, was too big, but as my cat and I got more used to the brushing process, I have started to consider the long-handled brush to be just the right size.
The toothpaste is rather sticky and sweet smelling. A quick list of the ingredients includes a tartar control agent, one surfectant, one lime scale remover, one breath freshener, two "toothpaste texture" ingredients, one pigment, two forms of artificial sugar (one being sorbitol), several preservatives, and flavor. Doing a quick look-up of these on Wikipedia shows that more than a few are considered carcinogens, and none of them are considered enzymatic cleaners.
But how does it work? My cat's teeth are looking much cleaner since I started brushing his teeth daily. The yellowish buildup on his teeth is slowly disappearing, and his breath is much fresher. However, since my cat has a mild case of gingivitis, the vet has recommended enzyme toothpaste. That, and considering my cat doesn't care for its flavor, I'll not be continuing to use this toothpaste.
The kit gets four stars for including a great toothbrush, and a toothpaste that works. It gets a star off for the toothpaste including too many preservatives, artificial sweeteners, and not being tasty for my cat.
