Getting Your Dog Comfortable In His Kennel

A bit of effort on your part can go a long way to ensure your dog adjusts well to his new kennel. Taking the time to introduce your dog to life in the kennel will lead to a better experience for both you and your pet.

Kennel familiarization may take several days or even weeks, depending on your dog’s age, temperament, and past experiences. It’s important to keep two things in mind while kennel training: The dog kennel should always be associated with something pleasant, and training should take place in a series of small steps. Don’t go too fast!

First, introduce your dog to the kennel by placing a favorite toy, blanket or beloved object into the kennel. To encourage your dog to enter the kennel, try dropping some small food treats nearby, then just inside the door, and finally, all the way inside of the kennel. If he isn’t interested in treats, try tossing a favorite toy in the kennel. Don’t expect instant results, this process may take several days.

When he enters the kennel, offer enthusiastic verbal praise. Quietly close the gate and secure it. Never slam the gate after your dog enters. He should regard his kennel as a safe place rather than a punitive time-out area.

For best results, introduce your pet to his new kennel enclosure for brief periods over time. Stay nearby. Some pets may try to bite or chew the enclosure; some may try to climb out. Your pet may bark or whine. Verbally reassure him. Increase the length of time he is contained until you believe he’s comfortable in his new kennel.

Pet toys and other familiar objects can be reassuring to our pet, and help to pass the time while he’s contained. For more information, consult your veterinarian or other pet professional to make your pet’s transition to the kennel as stress-free as possible.

It took at four hours to put together.

The directions have you roll the chain link out, fix all the twists and tangles, and then roll it back up.

It's meant for dogs, I would at least expect that the dog couldn't chew through it.

This literally snaps into place. I got it because our farm dog has been trying to run up on the road and has nearly been hit a few times. The door latch has a locking mechanism on it that they would have to figure out not only how to lift it but turn the lock upright to get out. It has a padlock hole in case one would find one necessary as well. All together it took my husband 20 minutes from opening the packaging, reading the directions to set up. 10-10 would buy again.

Ordered this on 4/18 and it was delivered on 4/19. great service. I am 76 years old and this took about 4 hours for me to put up. It was not a hard job just a lot of small things to do. Getting the wires holders (ties) in place to stretch the chain link material took a lot of time, but it was worth it. Numerous ties makes for a secure product and it looks great with no sagging. There were more than enough ties to finish the job. Just finished the install and the dog is in the run. He is not too happy with being confined but he was chewing up too many of the evergreens and making himself sick. I looked around at Lowes, Tractor Supply and several others, but I could not beat the price. Now all I need is a cover, at least for part of it. I would highly recommend this product

The frame goes together quickly, but, it is not exactly sturdy. It can rack as you work with it and the vertical poles are not locked in at all, it depends on the wire fabric to hold it together. This is definitely a two or more person assembly. You build the frame then wrap the chain link fabric around it. The fabric sticks to itself making it very difficult to unwrap. I did this myself, and it took a while to untie the fabric from itself and many stands had to be twisted up or down to realign them. Then the hardest part, tying it. The top is not bad, but, the bottom is near impossible by yourself.

If you are prepared for a bit of work, this is a good cage. It's a standard size. It looks fine. But, the biggest issue in my mind, I've bought the units that were pre-built panels that slap together in a few minutes. They can be joined together if you buy multiples to make a bigger run for hyperactive dogs. This one really does not lend itself to that option. With two of the prebuilt panel units you can make a 10'x30' run. With this, if I cut the fabric back 10', slide another 3 panels from a preassembled unit or do the cutting of fabric on another of these, I can only make it 10'x20'.

So, if all you'll ever need is a 10'x10' pen, and you have the help and time, save the money and get this unit. If you plan to build a bigger run as your puppy grows into a dog, as I will, this is not the way to go.

The frame is super easy to put together but once you get to the chain link fence it is super hard. The chain link is all rolled up and when you unroll it, it is a tangled mess. It took at four hours to put together.

I ordered this because my family rescued a beagle last week. Ordered on Wednesday put together on Sunday. I ended up ordering the canopy as well. The frame took about 10 minutes to put together, of course the fence took longer. I did roll it out, fixed the mismatching links and then wrapped around the frame, this made it much easier. Now in terms of tying the fence to the frame, that was time consuming, but I did this by myself with a broken forearm. Sure would have been faster if I had some help, but it is very manageable for one person and I was very concerned by all the negative reviews at first. The kennel is sturdy and a great buy for the price. My wife is amazed at how nice it looks and her friends are going to purchasing for their homes. A professional building an equivalent kennel would cost easily 2 to 3 times this amount. My feeling is all those complained do not have a mind for putting things together. I would buy this again, actually may by another for chickens.

This is a great kennel. Got it for our Jack Russell Terrier. Had to put some extra fencing around the bottom of the gate as he can stick his head through, other than that, great and very satisfied.

Do not buy this item. We bought it for our three dogs and we followed the directions to a t. The dogs busted a hole through the kennel fencing. The frame is extremely wobbly and the fencing was not the same length. It was the biggest waste of money. Please do not buy this. Save yourself time and money and buy a welded kennel.
