4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Dogs Requiring Special Care
I purchased one of these to use in addition to a microchip. These are nice to give special care (medical history, medications ect..) instructions if lost or separated from your furry companion and you are unable to be reached imediately. The only problem is that its not readily reconized as a USB drive. At first glance it looks like a trainning color. It has held up...

1.0 out of 5 stars Like a dog tag, but costlier!
Brilliant! It does everything a dog tag does, except... you need a computer to read it. Stores all the information that's in a microchip, except... can be removed by someone who doesn't want your dog to be found. By combining the worst features of both, this item won the Rube Goldberg Gratuitous Use of Technology Award for 2007. Okay, to be fair, this is useful if you...

The only problem is that its not readily reconized as a USB drive. At first glance it looks like a trainning color. It has held up nicely over the last year with no problems concerning the operation. I would strongly recommend this product if your dog requires medication to increase the chance of proper and prompt care.

4.0 out of 5 stars genius: eight bucks could save my dog or cat's life - or even mine!, December 12, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: PetSafe - Cat Micro I.D. Collar (Misc.)
This is a simple and inexpensive means to add one more way that your dog or cat can be helped to find its way home should it ever be lost. The first place people check on a lost pet is the collar and with every toddler to grandma carrying a tablet or laptop these days I feel it is highly like that the flash drive will be known on sight for what it is; a tool to help guide Fido or Fluffy back home.

The cover on this thing is very difficult to remove which is a plus in one way because it's very unlikely that it would come off by accident causing the drive to be lost. One the downside, I needed to use a flat screwdriver to pry the cover off to retrieve the drive to load the information on it. Not a big deal though, and when I was finished activating the drive it was easy to snap everything back into place.

I inserted the drive to the USB port on my Mac and it was instantly recognized. I opened the the application and it walked me though the various steps to enter the information about my pet. If you want to activate an additional pet finder service offered by the company there is a small fee but you can decline this and it moves right along with the next question. The fields you fill in can be as basic or as complex as you feel necessary. There is AMPLE room given to make highly specific notes for a number of categories from diet, medications, special needs, etc.

Setup took me about five minutes. If you want to go back and add or edit information you just reinsert the drive and proceed through the steps to get to the field you want.

My one quibble with this device is that the housing of is NOT waterproof - this is a huge negative that I hope the company addressed in the future.

This is such a great idea the I have purchased a second unit to have MY OWN information entered on the device; I have a complex medical history with SLE and what needs to be known just won't fit on a medic alert bracelet. I'll be putting a card in my wallet that informs emergency services to look for this device. Some nurse or doctor one day might get a chuckle that their "people patient" has a "pet finder" medic alert I.D. but at least they will have the exact information the need right at their fingertips in an emergency.

Very pleased with this purchase and highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dog tags, May 12, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought these for my dogs and my children's dogs. It's not the most high-tech toy in town, but will help if your beloved bet is found by someone who is curious enough to figure out there is a flash drive on the dogs collar. Even though not a perfect solution, ie is another tool in protecting your pups.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Idea!, November 29, 2007
I've never actually seen one of these used, but going on the idea and how simple it would be, this is PERFECT. Most people have a computer, or at least use one at work, or have a neighbor with one. Almost all computers can be used with USB Flash Drives, and they're small and sturdy enough. I wouldn't pay $60 for this, though. Flash drives big enough to store the data you would need to get your pet back home would be only MB small... and I recently bought a 1 GB flash drive for $13. That, in a little plastic thing, attached to a collar, is all that this seems to be. For the price, maybe not worth it, because microchipping is about the same price, and isn't impossible for small dogs to carry around! With a lightweight container that could be attached to the dog's normal collar with a smaller USB drive in it, the price would be much lower and therefore more effective AND less expensive than microchipping.
