Product Description

The new and improved Boundary Wire Break Locator helps easily detect wire breaks within any in-ground fence system. Temporarily replace your transmitter then trace your fence configuration. Audible tones help discover each side of a broken wire. Locates complete breaks only; partial breaks will not be detected by the system.

This has been one of my most frustating purchases ever and I have done many. First, they provide a hand radio for detecting the break. I live in a suburb of a large city and I receive stations at all times. I did as recommended and used a digital radio and tried at a different time of day. Next, the base blew a fuse and smoke was actually coming out of the unit (no exaggeration). Customer service said they would send me a replacement. They never did. I called back and they said it is on backorder and to keep checking.

I got tired of paying $75 every time someone cut the invisible dog fence. So I bought this product. I only used it the one time but it worked well and came with good instructions. The most difficult part is finding a way to hook up the unit to the invisible fence system. I stuck nails into the wire clip and used alligator clips which do not come with the unit. I would love to have a set of connectors. I may go to radio shack and see what they have next time I need to use the unit.

Our fence stopped working this past winter when there was about two feet of snow on the ground. It was impossible to look for the break until the snow melted. By then, the dogs had completely forgotten about the fence and would wander out into the street when people walked by, the neighbor's yards, etc. After unsuccessfully trying the Radio Shack trick, I spent about two hours one afternoon digging up sections of our fence looking for a break with no luck. Another search on the Internet for a solution brought me to Amazon and this product. The reviews were mixed but I was at my wits end so I decided to give it a try. Just prior to receiving the kit, Karen from Electric Dog Fence emailed to tell me the package would be delivered by the end of the day. She also gave me several useful tips to help locate the break. I will include them here because they work with or without the product:

1. Check the area near where you have already spliced the wire (driveways or sidewalk crossings)
2. Check areas where you have had breaks in the past. Depending on what was used to splice the wire, the splices may have broken or partially broken.
3. I recommend using the type of splices that come in your locator kit(direct ground burial rated). Plain electrical tape and splices that aren't made to be underground will fail at some point. These areas are vulnerable to having repetitive problems.
4. Once you locate your break (s), it may be better to replace a section of wire vs having many splices. (replacing a 50ft section of wire is easier than doing 5 splices along that 50 foot run)

The box arrived as promised, I read the instructions and the next day I spent about ten minutes setting up the detector and transmitter.

Just follow the instructions step-by-step, including ground wire placement and adding water to the area, and you will find the break easily and quickly. It took me about 20 minutes from start to finish; from opening the box and reading the instructions, to assembly, using it, and putting it away. Fixing the break is also quick and easy. Beats the heck out of paying someone $150 - $200.

I have "Invisible Fence" brand transmitter and collar. The PetSafe wire break locator works with any brand wire and radio-based, electric, invisible fence.

We bought a house which had had a fence installed at a prior time, but we didn't know where it was. I had planned on locating the fence using the collar, but unfortunately, when I connected our system's transmitter, it indicated that there was a break in the loop. After trying the Radio Shack rc choke method, and an el-cheapo wire tracker from Harbor Freight, I finally used the RFA-50. It was awesome - not only was I able to locate the wire to within a couple of inches, I also found the location of the break to within ~1 foot. It was fast, easily, and saved me so much time. I spent hours (with no success) trying to get the other methods to work, and after an hour with the unit I had finished our entire ~2000 ft. fence.

A word of advice: Make sure that you have a good ground, or it will not work correctly (I connected it right to our grounding rod, but any solid ground should work fine).

Purchased this and was able to find the break in the wire within a few feet around the boundary of my 1/2 acre yard. The radio(receiver) that comes with it worked but I found my son's old am/fm radio provided better adjustment of the frequency. Using the provided radio I found it difficult to pick up the transmitter frequency over the 50,000 watt AM radio station. Overall, it saved me much time and I am sure I will put it to use in the future after aerating my yard.

After some landscaping work this Spring, our underground fence system went on the blink. At first, we weren't concerned since our 11 yr.old dog seemed to have learned long ago not to even think about leaving the yard. But recently, he seems to have forgotten, and I ordered this device. Our hookup wasn't too difficult, the instructions were pretty clear, and it even comes with some wire and (tiny) wire nuts to help you make a repair/splice. The radio is also provided, and at first seemed to be a cheap throwaway; its AM selectivity is awful and it's got some serious front-end overload.

But you're not using it for the ballgame--once I hooked everything up and got a feel for the two tones being sent, I found three separate breaks, dug them up, spliced them, and within 2 hours everything was fixed.

One note--you should probably obtain wire nuts and some silicone seal (if you don't have any). My underground fence wire was a much bigger gauge than the relatively thin wire provided, and the little wire nut really didn't work. Also (as the instuctions say), once you make the repair you should seal it with some silicone and electrical tape if it's going back in the ground.

Of course, if my dog could use a computer...he'd probably have a rather different review--but I'm sure he understands I'm happy with this device!
