Proprietary Battery Required,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: PetSafe In-Ground Radio Fence UltraLight Receiver, PUL-250 (Misc.)
The battery only worked from June 3rd to July 4th. One Month! That's when I discovered that the collar ONLY takes PetSafe's, DISPOSABLE, proprietary, RFA-67 battery. The sales description makes it sound like PetSafe is throwing in a free battery with the new collar but doesn't explain that, unlike my other UL-275 receivers; the collar can't use standard lithium batteries from Wal*mart or K-mart. You have to buy PetSafe's battery if you want it to work for another month!

Works as promised,

Radio system products have always performed well for me. If you are thinking of electrically fencing in your dog, I have had 10+ years of problem free use with the system. The collars just wear out every 4-5 years though. Two thumbs up for this product.

This is a good product, but I might be more inclined to get the
stronger collar next time.

Best for small/very passive dogs - look at stubborn collar instead,

We bought this for our fairly calm golden retriever and it worked well until he figured out that it was worth the mild shock to get to the interesting smells beyond the fence. At first we felt guilty that we would "hurt" him with the shock, so tested it on ourselves and it really is about the same feel as when you shock yourself with static electricity -- uncomfortable but no pain. After a few weeks of him running the fence, we lost our fear of hurting him and ordered the "stubborn" dog collar (which I thought of for more pit bull/german shepherd dogs, not this teddy bear of a retriever.) Despite having to buy 2 collars now (actually 3 because he somehow got off and chewed up the first), I am thankful to Petsafe for providing a more economical route of electric fence than the big companies who only offer a total package with installation. Am hoping that the stubborn collar works better. Also like it that the stubborn collar works with 9V batteries that we can find at drugstore rather than having to special order ones.

No more digging under the fence,
By
This review is from: PetSafe In-Ground Radio Fence UltraLight Receiver, PUL-250 (Misc.)
I have a 1 yr old border collie/lab mix. He was digging underneath our fence and escaping from the back yards everytime we would leave the house. After installing the radio fence, he hasn't even tried to dig out. Installation was a snap. I didn't even bury the wire. I just ran it along the baseboard of our fence, then ran it up the wall and back to the garage by stapling it to the roof overhang. It works great!
Also, the receiver (collar) works with their indoor radio fence also. So I was able to get one of those to keep the dog away from the Christmas tree. I highly recommend this product!!!

No adjustments for correction,
By
This review is from: PetSafe In-Ground Radio Fence UltraLight Receiver, PUL-250 (Misc.)
There are several models of PetSafe collars and you need to read the fine print. Some invisible fences have the correction in the transmitter and some have it in each collar. On this particular model, there is no adjustment in the collar so if you have a transmitter that also doesn't have adjustable correction for the collar, you may not get the intensity you need. I had a very old Radio Fence transmitter which worked great with this collar. When the transmitter stopped working, I bought a new one and just this week realized that neither the transmitter nor collar receivers are adjustable for intensity. That means my dogs are getting the beeps and a tiny little shock.
This collar when used with a good transmitter that allows for changing the correction intensity is actually pretty decent. But, when used with the PetSafe Inground Fence replacement transmitter, http://www.amazon.com/Petsafe-Deluxe-In-ground-Replacement-Transmitter/dp/B001PNU0GK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1297030758&sr=8-2 is very ineffective. If my transmitter had the adjustable intensity option, I would probably give this collar a 4, maybe 5. I am giving a one because when I am doing my research, I always read the low ratings to see if they apply and this an important detail. I am about to order yet another PetSafe collar that DOES have the correction settings built into the collar.

Got as a second collar thinking it would be smaller as it was listed as lighter weight. Rather big on my small dog (see photo) but works. Delivery and price were good.

I'm glad I bought this for my little 14 lb. Dachshund because the one that came with the underground fence system would have been way too huge for her. So the Lab got the fence system's included collar and the Dachshund got this one. She has done well with it and it worked great with the fence system I bought.

Works excellent,
This review is from: PetSafe In-Ground Radio Fence UltraLight Receiver, PUL-250 (Misc.)
I bought this collar as my dog is very easy to train. I replaced the metal prongs with flat screws now as the beeping is good enough to keep my dog in the yard. hard to train dogs I would recommend the larger collar.
Works excellent, doesnt go through batteries that fast unless your dog is constantly testing the fence, although buying a few extras is a good idea. |
