My older male dog, had begun to urinate in my living room after the introduction of a new younger male into the household. I never was able to catch him doing it so correcting the behavior effectively was just not happening. I purchased a large scat mat and a large extention and placed them on either side of the coffee table leg that my dog had repeatedly urinated on. The first afternoon it was down, I noticed a few drops of urine on the mat, cleaned it up and waited. For several days no dog went near the area, then the old fella must have forgotten and revisited one more time. It has been over a week with no accidents anywhere in the house. Hurray! Hurray! A problem that I have been trying to catch and correct for several months is finally under control! I plan to leave the mats in place for a few months just to insure the lesson is reinforced if need be and the behavior does not begin again.
I really like this product and would highly recommend to anyone with a similar problem. For those of you who worry about using something intended to give a shock, this is a static shock, like when you shuffle across the carpet and then touch a doorknob. My husband forgot and three times stepped on it with his bare feet in the same night. He said that it was not painful just startling and bit unpleasant. Come to think of it, I haven't seen him in the living room lately either (lol).

I cant believe how effective this mat is. one of our cats decided she owned our master bedroom and bed, to the point bad things were happening in our sleep. we tried everything, this was our second to last resort. We ordered the large version with battery only and placed it in front of our bedroom door. all it took was one step on the mat and the cats (2) will not go past the door way into the bedroom. We have had the mat for about 3 months now. The cats understand the mat has something to do with the shock, so we have to leave it out so they wont re-enter the bedroom, but it has been disabled for a month (we dont have a battery in it any more). just the presence of the mat keeps them away from the room. we tried touching the mat ourselves, thinking if the cats were going to go thru this we need to have an idea of what the effect was. it is similar to a mild static shock on the high setting. You can hold your hand on it getting 'shocked' repeatedly with only mild discomfort. I think it is more the scare factor that keeps the cats away.

Highly effective, great product

Typically I don't write negative reviews and my experience with the scat mat wasn't successful.

First of all, I order the Scat Mat in the hopes of keeping my cat Kato off of our turtles enclosure. We have a large enclosure with a lid and window where we keep a Red Ear Slider. Routinely my cat sits on the enclosure and watches my turtle and occasionally will pounce on the glass, startling the turtle and send him back into the water.

We placed the scat mat right over the window so our cat would not sit on it or peer through it. Our cat learned his lesson and just moves the mat to the side by touching the points that are not electrified.

I'm not sure if my cat is especially bright or if this is a common occurrence. The mat now sits in a closet, useless.

Friends recommended this for my 2 Daschund/Beagle puppies who had developed a very stong affinity to the Christmas Tree and had chewed off the lights from the bottom of the tree. The branches were bedraggled and the the lower half of the tree was devoid of decorations. The minute I got it I positioned it under the tree and waited. One yelp and the tree was "saved", although we did have to trash it and buy a new one - on sale.
I have subsequently used it in various areas of the house and do not even "arm" it. They know it is there and do not even approach that area. Hence, I save batteries and still have two reasonably behaved, spoiled puppies. Great training tool.

I have only used this in front of my bedroom door to try to stop my cat from entering (he wreaks havoc when I'm trying to go to sleep, knocking everything off my nightstand and jumping on my curtains). It worked OK the first night but he started yowling an hour before my alarm went off because he couldn't come in. He has stepped on it, and does not like it obviously. I have to almost completely close the bedroom door or else he just jumps over it, so I'm not sure how valuable it is. It might work better on a table or couch, but I haven't gotten that far yet. Also, I noticed that he was able to step on and spend a few seconds on it before he got zapped.

I purchased every cat stay away spray they make. They all work for about an hour. Then WHALA!!! my cat is on the damn $3500 chair again. Then I saw this in a pet store for $99. I thought it was far too expensive so I went home to look on Amazon. As usual it's half the price on here. It came in 3 days. Put in the battery. Set it to medium intensity. I put my hand on it and it does give quite the little tingle. It won't hurt you or the cats but it is pretty intense. I LOVE that it's clear so the chair doesn't look awful with it on it. I have 2 sweet wonderful cats and they love my $3500 dollar Brookstone massage chair as much as I do. They however just like to hang out on it. SO, my little baby about a week ago decided to wait for the usual hour or so before the spray away stuff wore off and up she went. I just so happen to be looking in that direction when she sat on the seat and all of a sudden she jumped up and leaped off the chair and ran upstairs. She came down 10 minutes later to eat but since then won't go anywhere near the chair. This thing works. She must have told her brother because he won't even go near the chair to check it out anymore. Not sure how this would work for dogs but I can honestly say it totally works for cats. This thing really works.

Normally we have one large dog about the house, sometimes a second visitor. Both dogs love to climb on furniture and sleep through the night. Since we put the ScatMat on the sofa and a chair, neither dog will go near it. It really works. Even if you forget to energize it, the dogs will not approach the mats. I am very satisfied with the mats.

My three cats, two males and a female, all fixed, are 14 years old and were born under our bed. They've had the run of our houses for their whole lives but now they're getting old, cranky, and their toilet habits aren't as reliable as they once were. For cats who've had free access to the furniture for their whole lives, these came as a shock and they had to try it a few times, but after a couple of weeks we don't even have to turn them on any more; if the mat is on the furniture, they don't go there.

I ordered the ScatMat to try and keep my curious little cat from climbing on top my lizards tank. I tested it on myself first just to be sure it wasn't painful and it was just like a static shock. The cat jumped on top of it one time and hasn't done so since. It has worked wonders for us!
