5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of troubles at start until... now a 5 star is in order!
We have 2 cats. At $35 a pop, that is quite expensive.

We had lots of troubles at first. The keys stopped working regularly after a few days worn by each cat. We finally found the reason: when drinking from their water bowl, the key was actually bathing in the water! So we tried to cover with plastic, tried to make it waterproof, but it kept getting water...

2.0 out of 5 stars Frustrating
I recently purchased an infrared door, and had to deal with getting two of these keys ready for my cats. For some unknown reason, the metal ring that came with both of mine to attach the key to the cat's collar wasn't already attached to the key itself, and it DOESN'T fit the tiny opening on the key. I recently purchased an infrared door, and had to deal with getting two of these keys ready for my cats. For some unknown reason, the metal ring that came with both of mine to attach the key to the cat's collar wasn't already attached to the key itself, and it DOESN'T fit the tiny opening on the key. I had to hunt down a smaller key ring for the first key and chop off part with wire cutters to even get it to fit, and I'm sitting here staring at the second key and a gimp metal ring that won't work with it so I have no idea how I'm going to actually attach this to the cat's collar.

Also, I was confused to see that there was a $10 difference between this key on Amazon and the yellow key; who knows why blue was deemed such a valuable color that it requires a $10 difference.

1.0 out of 5 stars Defective Key Collars, May 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: PetSafe Staywell Add-a-Cat Extra Infrared Key Collar, Blue (Misc.)
I've used these key collars from Staywell for several years. I've put together probably 10 of these collar keys purchased from Moore Pet Doors with no problems at all. I ordered six from Amazon in January 2010 and they are all defective. The ring will not fit into the slot for the key. I took them to Zales Jewelry Store and they filed out the opening so that they now work.

I did write to Staywell/Petsafe several times with no response. The phone number was in UK so I didn't call it. I think there has been a recent sale of the company.

I should point out that except for this defect on these specific collar keys, the infrared door and collar are excellent.

We have 2 cats. At $35 a pop, that is quite expensive.

We had lots of troubles at first. The keys stopped working regularly after a few days worn by each cat. We finally found the reason: when drinking from their water bowl, the key was actually bathing in the water! So we tried to cover with plastic, tried to make it waterproof, but it kept getting water inside and oxidizing.

The solution? just getting a smaller bowl for the water. We found one that has the water container and dispense water when needed. Since the keys have always stayed outside the bowl and no more issues.

Batteries last long enough not to worry too much. If we have to leave a few days, we make sure they have new batteries in and on the flap door.

Anecdote: each of the cat has "lost" their collar, with the key on. We were very annoyed to have to leave the flap open so the cats could still come in and out. One of our cat suddenly came home with the lost collar in his mouth! $35 saved. Then his brother had same problem. Collar lost. Same cat came back few days later with his brother collar in his mouth! $70 total saved. Who said cats are not clever??? LOL
