Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

There's a new guy in town, and Pete can't wait to meet him. After all, more friends means more fun. But who can he be?

When Pete finally meets Gus, he realizes they're very different from each other. But that's what makes him cool: Gus is special in his own way, just like Pete and just like you, and there is something everyone can do!

About the Author

James Dean's art has sold in more than ninety galleries and shops across the United States. He has devoted his paintings to Pete the Cat for ten years and has turned his natural love for cats into his life's work. James published his first adult book, The Misadventures of Pete the Cat, a history of his artwork, in 2006. He illustrated his first self-published children's book, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, in 2008, and the follow-up book, Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes, in 2011. James lives in Savannah, Georgia, with his wife, four cats, and one dog.

In 2004, Kimberly & James Dean sat down at their kitchen table to work on a children's book together. Their dream finally became a reality with the release of Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses. Both left corporate jobs in the late nineties (James was an electrical engineer, Kimberly worked in the press office of the governor of Georgia) to pursue their passion for art, and they have experienced a life made up of strange and wonderful coincidences ever since. Pete the Cat has brought magic into their lives. They work in side-by-side studios in Savannah, sharing their home with five cats and Emma the pug.

Ugh! This book makes me cry. It breaks my heart that children who have fallen in love with the first four Pete the Cat books might pick this up and instead of the happy-go-lucky growth mindset cat I loved -- this is a commercialized stuffed replica with no soul. The author's message -- if you can't do something the first time you try, give up quick, whine about it, and look for something else you might be good at.

I love books. I love kids, and I've never banned a book, but this one will NEVER come into my classroom! I've purchased the last book that has James and Kimberly Dean's names on the cover-- always a disappointment. Now I know where the magic is -- go check out Eric Litwin's new book, it's fantastic!

Pete is a cool cat, but this illustrator is showing his true colors, and they're not pretty. So not cool to ditch the author of the original books and replace him with your wife! I'm sure she's a nice person, but, come on! Beyond the lousy politics of it, my Kindergarten students really missed the word play and songs they had come to expect from Pete The Cat so I'm going to stick with the first four books and call it a day.

My son loves Pete the Cat, but this was quite boring and a waste of my money.

Let me list my reasons:

1, Fosters the attitude of inclusion toward those who are different.
2. Has repetitive refrain where students can join in on the reading.
3. Has cute illustrations.
4. Is part of a series and has an animated computer site tied in at Pete's site, which is his name with a dot com.
5. Is a quick read of only 5 minutes--even with elaboration.

I can only vouch for this book in the series.

A former reviewer has misread the book. This is NOT about giving up after one attempt in life, but about recognizing our limitations and not trying to "fit in" no matter what. And it's further about accepting different skill sets that people have, and cultivating in the reader/listener an attitude of tolerance of and encouragement for others that may feel somewhat worthless among peers who they may feel they don't measure up to in a certain capacity--yes, too long a sentence.

While I wish they would do more sing a long books this one is ok. The message is everyone has a talent. I disagree with the other review that it is saying to give up. I think it's saying you need to find what you're good at and rock at that.

I was excited to see a new Pete the Cat book, but my excitement dwindled quickly. I was surprised (in a bad way) at the illustrations in the book. A kid could do better. Even the story seemed lackluster. This book really lacks the fun of the previous books.

My boys love this series! We have all of the books now and the only downfall to this book is that instead of just being an audio download it is a video download. My kids would rather watch the video then look at the pages so I find myself having to disguise my phone so they look at the book. I wish it were audio only like the others. But the story line is great.
