Book Description

January 22, 2008
Pete Doherty, erstwhile singer with The Libertines, is a British icon. Whether he is playing impromptu gigs in his front room or performing at Live 8, he possesses a sense of drama and expectation not seen in a performer since Sid Vicious. He is enigmatic, charismatic and thoroughly entertaining. Since leaving The Libertines, his life has become something of a rock 'n' roll soap opera where rumours of crack addiction abound, gossip about his relationship with Kate Moss is rife, and predictions for his future vary wildly. Written by Alex Hannaford, former rock and pop editor on the "London Evening Standard", and with a brand new foreword by Pete's mum, Jackie Doherty, this is the definitive biography of Pete Doherty.

About the Author

As a former rock and pop editor on the London Evening Standard and as a freelance writer and author, Alex Hannaford has interviewed scores of bands and solo artists over the past twelve years. In his spare time he has managed a successful US rock band, driven tour buses, worked as a talent scout for a major label, sung in bands, and even - at times - seen his house turned into a hostel for homeless musicians (much to his wife's annoyance). He has written for the Guardian, Evening Standard, Loaded, Best, Big Issue, Dazed & Confused and Bizarre, among others.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Bit Different than Expected, May 21, 2011

This review is from: Pete Doherty: Last of the Rock Romantics (Paperback)
I expected this to be a little boring considering that the guy who wrote it...well is a geezer. Forwarded by his Mom, and then that was going to turn me off.

I came around and bought a used copy.

I was looking more for info about the history of the songs, and found a little tidbits, but a lot of stories are in other books already published. Still a decent read, especially if you follow and support Peter Doherty as an artist.

I am not sure if he authorized it or not.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some good moments, October 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Pete Doherty: Last of the Rock Romantics (Paperback)
I enjoyed the beginning, which features some nice detail about Pete's upbringing and childhood, with snippets from former classmates and friends. There were a few things in the book that I've never read in other books on Pete/ The Libertines.

However, I immediately noticed one glaring error: the author got Pete's birthdate wrong. How you write a book about someone and don't get their birthday correct, I don't know. I also don't know how this managed to slip by Pete's mom, who wrote the foreword to the book. And, a few of the details (chronicling specific events/ incidents) conflicted with those I've read in other books (which were direct quotes from the other Libertines.) If you are familiar with the Libertines/ Doherty saga, this book will probably offer little more than you already knew.

Still, a good read and I don't regret buying it.
