Editorial Reviews

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band has been carrying the distinctive sound of New Orleans jazz around the world on behalf of Preservation Hall, a unique venue that embodies the city s musical legacy. With a cast of musicians schooled through first-hand experience and apprenticeship into the music s historic traditions, the PHJB has served as an irreplaceable, vital link to the earliest days of one of America s most beloved forms of popular music.

Bought their other CD when it came out a few years back and was very excited to buy this one.

The selection of performers on this CD is a little puzzling and I'm not sure how the selection of groups and their tunes relate to the intent of the CD.

Played Dixie in college many years ago, and have seen Preservation Hall a number of times....true Dixie!

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band sounds fine in this CD, of course when they're actually playing, which is not often. The selection of performers on this CD is a little puzzling and I'm not sure how the selection of groups and their tunes relate to the intent of the CD. For example, "Givers," Tao Seeger, "My Morning Jacket and King Britt," Yaslin Bey, and a few others seem to be loosely lined up as fillers between the main (i.e., absent) performers. I was expecting more in the likes of Allen Toussaint and Trombone Shorty, both of whom occupy "cameo" spots in the listing. For me, the best track is the opening tune, "Burgundy Street Blues," played on Tom Sancton's mellow clarinet. The final tune, "I'll Fly Away," includes The Preservation Hall Junior Jazz Band," a group I would have liked to hear on other tracks for a better sense of their playing. The concept for the CD was promising with some good potential, but the end result just isn't there.

I was lucky enough to score a lone 1st row seat for this show, at the last minute. This document reminds me of just what a celebratory vibe coursed through Carnegie Hall that night. This was a party, for the city that helped pick up another, at a low point. After the hurricane, there were many musicians from New Orleans without a home. New York had set up benefit concerts soon after the event, and hosted many shows and literally provided homes and purpose for many of NOLA's artists, in the intervening months and years. This concert felt like a big Thank you, not specifically for the monetary support but more for the cultural support, for adopting their art so that none of it got lost in the uncertainty of it all. I had been to the Hall on a visit to NOLA, some years before the hurricane and I had attented a benefit for the city at Radio City, soon afterward. I felt a connection for the place and specifically for this music. About a week before this show, I stumbled onto a web advertisment for it and a quick scan for tickets turned up one, first row, seat. It seemed like some sort of musical divine calling, that I attend. Now this document plays through my home system. This gift keeps giving, I'm a lucky man. Preservation, indeed !

I heard some tracks from this CD in the wee small hours on radio, and I just HAD to have it.
No disappointment...just listen to the two versions of St James InfIrmary...WONDERFUL, and delightful surprises with the other tracks.
Arrived in Australia promptly and in perfect condition.

2012 performance recording, produced by Allan Jaffe's son, of a sampler of the music that has distinguished the New Orleans organization for 50 years.

I liked it but I got tired of it quickly. Every song sounds the same. Great musicians but little variety.
