Book Description

April 1, 2005 Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament
In this newest addition to the acclaimed BECNT series, respected New Testament scholar Karen H. Jobes provides a fresh commentary on 1 Peter.

1 Peter admirably achieves the dual aims of the BECNT series--it is academically sophisticated as well as pastorally sensitive and accessible. This volume features Jobes's own translation of the Greek text and detailed interaction with the meaning of the text, emphasizing the need to read 1 Peter in light of its cultural background.

Jobes's commentary will help pastors, students, and teachers better understand the Christian's role as a "foreigner" in contemporary society.

Great Exposition of 1 Peter November 21, 2007
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Karen Jobes does a great job expounding 1 Peter. She shows that the audience Peter was writing to were Jewish believers in Christ moved to Pontus, Cappadocia, and other parts of Asia Minor by the edicts of Claudius expelling them from Rome. Peter is writing to these "strangers and aliens in the world" by showing them how to live for Christ in a world hostile to Christianity.

She drives this home in our discussion of the roles of citizens, slaves, and spouses in 1 Peter 2:11-3:7. She says that Peter wisely leaves many of the specifics of submission to the spouses while also noting the purpose of submission (1 Peter 3:2, 7).

There are a few places where I wish the exegesis was a tad deeper, say for instance in 1 Peter 3:8-12, where the words "harmony" and "humility" are discussed in detail but there isn't as much discussion about sympathy and compassion.

But Jobes has a great handle on 1 Peter and it is the best commentary on this epistle in print today. She also has appropriate areas of application and challenge, and a lot of thought and hard work went into this book. She knows the scholarly literature very well, and takes on the theories of J.H. Elliott and J.K. Elliott, as well as older interpreters like Selwyn and Best.

A nice job all around!

As a pastor, I enjoyed this commentary very much (I actually read it cover to cover). I thought her arguments were interesting and well-researched and provided helpful insights for preaching and teaching. She does argue, with interesting original research that the Apostle Peter could very well have written the letter, both in terms of the letter's time frame and the way the Greek is written. Additionally, she provides a useful understanding to whom the letter may have been written that explains well what is in the text. I'd highly recommend this commentary to others.

Thorough and thoughtful January 31, 2009
Format:Hardcover
Jobes' work is my go-to for solid exegesis and exposition on 1 Peter. Not only does she carefully lay out the arguments of others, she offers carefully detailed, new arguments of her own to add to the mix. I find her suggestion that the "foreigners" of 1 Peter were Christians (both Jewish and Gentile) who were expelled from Rome to be compelling. The introduction alone is worth the price of the book.

Her work is invaluable for sermon preparation. Thanks, Karen!
