5.0 out of 5 stars A simple tale of adventure, magic, & beauty
Peter has set out in the forest to find berries for his mother's birthday gift, but where are the berries? Fortunately, the mouse-sized King of Blueberry Land arrives, taps Peter on his toe, shrinks him down to his size, and takes him on a magical adventure picking berries, harnessing mice, sailing in slips of bark, and chirping with crickets. My 2- and 4-year-old...

1.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book, horrible small format in this edition
Elsa Beskow's "Peter In Blueberry Land" is one of our favorite children's books. The illustrations are lovely and the story delights a wide range of ages. The only problem is that this particular format (a hardcover book measuring 6.7" wide x 5.2" tall) does not do justice to such a treasure. The pictures are not as enjoyable and, in many cases, the publishers of this edition have chosen to place text on top of the illustrations. It is definitely worthwhile seeking out the larger format hardcover book (12.5" wide x 9.5" tall) as you will want to keep it for future generations. It would be better, in my opinion, to buy a good second hand copy of the larger book than a new smaller version.

This book would be a wonderful addition to any young child's library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful story with beautiful illustrations!, April 20, 1999
By
I was delighted to learn that Elsa Beskow's book "Peter in Blueberry Land" was still in print. My grandfather in Norway sent it to me as a gift when I was a child and I just loved the story and the beautiful and wonderful illustrations. It is a book that has stood the test of time--Elsa Beskow first published the book in 1901.

Now, I have purchased a copy for my grandchildren. The story is one of a small boy and his adventures (in dream sequence) of picking blueberries for his mother's birthday gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal Children's Book, December 27, 2004
By
This book is without doubt one of the best children's books out there. Elsa Beskow, having written most of her works between 1900-1925, doesn't have the same exposure in bookstores of more recent authors backed by large publishing houses, but her books are true gems. "Peter in Blueberry Land" is an excellent story full of adventure and humor but absent any saccharine moralizing or fluffy language. The illustrations are balanced, appealing, and elegant. The couplets in this story actually rhyme in the original Swedish edition, but the translation is quite good and captures the correct tone. Great for age 18 months and up. Don't forget to look at Beskow's other books too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story captures my 2.5 yr old, May 30, 2004

I became discouraged with other books that others had given us. They were so loud and in your face drawings- hard on the eyes and I was really becoming aware of the yukky content in some of these 'modern' story books. So when we heard about these books I purchased this one first. My 2.5 yr old son is captivated by it and we've read it every night for a week- he knows half the story all ready! The drawings are so beautiful and within the story there are so many good things that happen- the boys help to fill Peters basket with berries, they comb their hair and clean their teeth and hands before they go see Mrs. Cranberry. The fact that Peter is looking for berries for his mothers birthday is touching too. Overall it's just a real 'feel good' book. I can't wait to be able to afford more! :-)

3.0 out of 5 stars Peter in Blueberry Land, November 6, 2006

This review is from: Peter in Blueberry Land (Mini Edition) (Hardcover)
We own a larger version of Peter in Blueberry Land and I purchased an additional copy for my son's class room, as his birthday gift to them. However, I was extremely disapointed to open our order and find a much smaller book than what I thought I was getting. I wish that amazon had noted the sized difference on the web page. I should have guessed by the price, $10.

Our children love Elsa Beskow books and I was so hoping to share her wonderful tales with my son's classroom. I will have to return this copy and seek out a larger edition. The beautiful drawings are barely discernable in this tiny edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the original translation!, July 21, 2010

This review is from: Peter in Blueberry Land (Mini Edition) (Hardcover)
Please be aware that this is not the original translation (or at least the 1975 one). I mistakenly bought this, even especially looking for the large format edition, and found that it was not the one I remembered from my childhood. The original translation in entitled Peter's Adventures in Blueberry Land and in translated by Sheila LaFarge. I found the original to be much more quaint and it correctly identifies the mother in red as Mrs. Lingonberry, not Mrs. Cranberry. Why would they translate it as cranberry, when Elsa Beskow goes to the trouble to try and illustrate her botanicals correctly? Anyway, I wanted others to avoid the same mistake and disappointment. I wish the publishers and booksellers had made the difference more clear.

BTW, so far, findings of Sheila LaFarge translation are very expensive!

4.0 out of 5 stars wonderful book except for small format, May 14, 2006
This review is from: Peter in Blueberry Land (Mini Edition) (Hardcover)
My son loved this book so much when we read it at the library, I had to buy him a copy. The story is gentle but has a little adventure to it. The illustrations are just beautiful. My only disappointment is that this particular printing is a smaller format than the library copy we were reading, so part of the wonderful pictures are obscured by text.

This book is perfect for children ages 2-6. It is innocent, no bad words at all. Elsa Beskow is very educated about plants and herbs and her drawings are accurate. I can't even count how many times we've read this book. Every one of her books are spectacular, very well suited for homeschoolers of pagan and Christian inclinations; only in Christopher's Harvest and Around the Year,is there mention of God in the Christian sense, but I still think they are worth while books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative and imaginative, December 6, 2003
The story of Peter in Blueberry Land is a fun adventure of a boy searching for berries. Elsa Beskow's illustrations are touching. She is an artist who is able to loving portray natural beauty. The drawings are simple yet beautiful enough to frame and hang on a wall. This story has a perfect ending -the evidence exists to show that dream can be real indeed.
