3.0 out of 5 stars sugary sweet and color overdose, March 17, 2010
This review is from: Peter Cottontail (Read With Me Paperbacks) (Paperback)
For anyone who has read Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit, let me just say:

And Now For Something Completely Different!

There is no rabbit pie here, no angry farmer, just a perturbed (yet nonviolent) wolf. This Saccharin storybook presents an overly sweetened version of the history* behind easter egg hunts: a Santa-like bunny (with round-rimmed glasses, of course) named Peter Cottontail--no doubt capitalizing on the aforementioned classic--who brings baskets full of eggs and candy to all the good boy and girl bunnies.

*The real truth: it was a Pagan festival symbolizing the rebirth of the earth.

There is a villain in this story, but like Sam-I-Am's nemesis from Green Eggs and Ham, Willy Wolf ultimately sees the way:
"I like Easter. And I love Easter egg hunts! This is the best Easter I ever had!"

The challenge of finding the 76 hidden easter eggs throughout the pages of the book provides some staying power. This Scholastic paperback actually does have the tiniest of spines. Perhaps their Cartwheel Books imprint is a step up?

P.S.

I just learned that Here Comes Peter Cottontail: The Original TV Classic [Remastered] was a Rankin-Bass production back in the early 70s. (They did the classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.)
