This review is from: Peter Pan (Dalmatian Press Adapted Classic) (Library Binding)
This edition of the book has some of the vocabulary changed from JM Barrie's original version, which is not necessarily a bad thing since some of the original would be extremely confusing, if not incomprehensible to children today, and some words might be considered offensive. However, they made a particularly poor choice in choosing a replacement word for "redskins" - they chose "Injun," which is still a racial slur. (Would it have been so hard just to use "Indian" throughout?) Also, the name Barrie had chosen for their tribe - Piccaninny - still remains.
It's also a condensed version; also not necessarily a bad thing. Many scenes are completely removed, such as the part where George Darling has a fit and ties Nana up outside (in fact, George Darling is virtually nonexistent as a character), the part Lost Boys build a small house around Wendy, and the part where Peter confuses Captain Hook at Marooner's Rock. Whether or not this was a good thing would depend on how much you liked these parts. Wendy's romantic feelings toward Peter are also cut out.
They also removed much of the violence - for example, pirates who were originally killed in the final confrontation were instead knocked out or swam away from the ship. A reference to suicide is removed: Hook's bottle of poison is no longer carried lest he should be taken alive by enemies, but now carried because he never knows when he needs to poison someone. (Because killing other people is better than killing yourself?)
On the positive side, most of what remains is Barrie's own work, and Peter's character isn't completely demolished, as happens in many adaptations. But overall, I feel that this was a pretty poor adaptation.
