This review is from: Peter Fischli & David Weiss: Equilibres (Paperback)
Like all of Fischli and Weiss' books, this book-long sequence of photographs is cerebral and fun. Each time I pull it off the shelf I have a new experience. The book interrogates photography but not in an antagonistic or didactic way. Each still life is accompanied by a title that functions as a caption. Sometimes the same arrangement of objects is photographed multiple times, each time receiving a different title. Each still life gives its own feeling, which the titles enhance, supplement, or confuse. It is a compare/contrast exercise but also a study of the feelings we can project ideas onto objects. The balance of the objects themselves stands as a metaphor for the balance between the photograph and the viewer. It also stands for the balance of the work overall, the act of creating an aesthetic balance. The result of these multiple balancing acts creates a warm exchange between the viewer and the artists.
