This review is from: Peter Fischli & David Weiss: Sonne, Mond und Sterne (Paperback)
Really interesting book. It is filled with advertisements torn out of magazines, one per page. Some of them look slightly enlarged, but otherwise they appear as untouched facsimiles. The ads, in French, German, and English mostly, are for everything from cars to hotels to vacation spots to detergents, and most of them are recognizable. They are loosely grouped by their various qualities. Some sequences group ads with a predominant color, while others group ads with cars or animals. Several sequences echo simple shapes.
The proper work, as displayed in galleries, showed the actual pages arranged on tables under plexi. It was a bit easier to get a sense of the loose associations by looking at them all at once as one walked around the tables. I think much of the effect of the work depends on quick glances between multiple ads because the relationships between them are not always apparent. The book presentation of the work is still very good, even if a little flipping back and forth between pages is required. |
