Editorial Reviews

This CD, from baseball expert Peter Gammons, is the companion to the annual concert of the same name that takes place each January in Boston. Net proceeds benefit the Jimmy Fund for cancer research and care. Highlights include live performances by Pearl Jam, Dropkick Murphys, The Allman Brothers Band, American Hi-Fi, and Little Feat, plus tracks by Paul Westerberg, Susan Tedeschi, and MLB stars Scott Spiezio and Jack McDowell with their bands. Also included is an all-star version of Gary Glitter's "Rock 'n' Roll Pt. 1/Rock 'n' Roll Pt. 2" featuring Peter Wolf, Dicky Barrett, Bill Janovitz of Buffalo Tom, Spiezio, Gammons, and about half of the 2003 Boston Red Sox.

ESPN's Peter Gammons, along with some prominent members of the Boston scene, including Red Sox owner Theo Epstein and some of his players, stage an annual fundraising event at the Hot Stove in Boston. This is the first release from the events, which donate proceeds to the Jimmy Fund and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
It's a great assemblage of talent, brought together to jam, primarily through a love of baseball. Pearl Jam is the "biggest name," but actually contributed the worst song, a rant of political ax-grinding that was out of place on a disc of classic covers, blues-bar jams, straight-ahead college rock and stadium ditties. In addition, it was the least compelling musically.
On a positive note, former Letters to Cleo frontwoman (and Josie vocalist) Kay Hanley offers up the best two songs, Your Summer Baby, and The Dirty Glass, in conjunction with Irish brawlers The Dropkick Murphys. Hanley is a criminally underknown artist, the prime rock chick out there today.
Other standouts include:
- Epstein's band, Trauser, covering the Neil Young classic. Trauser's female vocalist is very good, and put me mindful of Anneke from The Gathering or Cristina from Lacuna Coil, although musically the bands are far apart from these comparisons
- The slower but compelling song from Susan Tedeschi, who reminded me a lot of Norah Jones
-The Thin Lizzy-esque Hit That by The Gentlemen
- Past Due by Scott Spiezio's band Sandfrog, which would be at home on any modern rock radio station
- The funky Hoy Hoy by Little Feat
- The punky Hi-Fi Killer by American Hi-Fi
- And Rock and Roll Parts 1 and 2 by The Hot Stove All-Stars (including some Red Sox chanting the familiar "Hey!").

I guess it helps to know the person who gathered all the artists together to create the cd for a charity fundraiser. That would be Peter Gammons currently on leave due to blood clot in his brain-- - recovering fine- - -he is nicknamed "The Commish" because of the people he knows in baseball- - lead guy for ESPN baseball tonight gang- - super nice guy and can sing a little bit- - -a number of current and past ball players participate on the cd along with friends of Peter's who are musicians & singers- - -it is a good take- - -volume II should be coming out soon- - also note that Peter has his own cd just released July 4th with mostly 50's & 60's style music- - -good fun!!!!
