PreSchool-K-- At bedtime, Peter snuggles under the covers and looks out the window. The stars, the moon, the treetops, the clouds, the fog, the breeze, a bird, and a cat ritualistically wish him good night. "The fog floated by. 'Good night,' the fog hummed. 'May your bed be soft.' " The words are intended to comfort and pacify, but they convey instead a cloying sentimentality. Ray's strong crayon or colored pencil and wash illustrations evoke an elemental moonlit night, both mysterious and naturalistic. Unlike Margaret Wise Brown's Goodnight, Moon (Harper, 1947), which creates a loving bond between the protagonist and the world of his bedroom, this derivative work portrays a vast enigmatic exterior, distanced from the child.
