Book Description

August 1, 2008
Since 2006, iconoclastic British filmmaker Peter Greenaway has been engaged in a project to reinvigorate some of the most iconic paintings in the history of art in an attempt to get people to look at them again in a new way. Using audio and projectors, Greenaway barrages the selected paintings with imagery, cinema, poetry and special effects. Of his 2006 intervention with Rembrandt's The Nightwatch (1642), the filmmaker recalls, "We burned it, flooded it and covered it in blood, but if you go there today you will find it completely untouched." This volume is published concurrently with Greenaway's performance of Leonardo's Last Supper (2008) in the Refectory of the Santa Maria delle Grazie friary, where Leonardo da Vinci painted his famous masterpiece. This multi-media event will take place on the occasion of the 2008 Milan Furniture Fair. Da Vinci expert Martin Kemp, Professor of Art History at Oxford University, observes, "Greenaway has a terrific understanding of how painters work, which is not true of every filmmaker. There's no need to be stuffy about these things. If Leonardo had been around he would have been into moving images. You get the sense that he wanted his paintings to move."

1.0 out of 5 stars Ill-conceived, ill-designed and of little interest to Greenaway fans, March 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Peter Greenaway: Leonardo's Last Supper (Hardcover)
The volume is a series of extreme close-up photographs of most of Leonardo's "Last Supper," prepared in conjunction with an exhibit by Peter Greenaway. Beware! There is only around 1 page of material on/by Greenaway, so, if you're a mere fan but not a total fanatic of Greenaway, there isn't much here that is really of enough interest to justify the high purchase price of the volume. Moreover, if you're considering the volume as a highly detailed photographic study of Leonhardo's work, you'll be equally disappointed. The gridding for the photographs is so idiotically designed and inflexibly followed that virtually all of the faces in the volume are cut in 2--part of the head on one page, the rest of the head separated by several pages. The face of Christ on the cover is an extreme and extremely unfortunate example of this: Although the publisher recognized the need to have a photo of the entire face for the cover, within the volume itself Christ's head is chopped into 4 pieces, each on a different page. As a result, the utility of the volume for art historians or lovers of art who wish to study Leonardo's portraiture is severely and unnecessarily limited. How any publisher could put out a volume this ill-conceived is unfathomable and shameful.
