Compositions from Peter Gunn as they would be played on the bandstand at Mother's, by a combo rather than a big band. Which makes this a special album indeed for Mancini fans. Leader Shelly Manne approaches these tunes as the good themes they are, not as private eye soundtrack music. Needless to say, this is the stuff Peter Gunn dropped by Mother's to hear, in the style he would have heard it.

I have never seen the show Peter Gunn, but the music must be extraudinary. Shelly Manne, the west coast drummer, played music from the tv series, Peter Gunn. The arrangements here are great, and such instruments as the marimba and vibes add to the enjoyment of the album. For me, the highlight is Sorta Blue. This piece is great! I love when Shelly stops, and lets Conte solo over the bass line. It's a real blues masterpiece. Other pieces such as The Floater, The Brothers, Soft Sounds, Dreamsville, and Brief And Breazy are great. This album is really fresh. The haunting theme of Fallout just grooves. The album closes with the up-tempo, A Profound Gass. All the musicians here, Victor Feldman, Conte Condoli, Herb Gheller, Russ Freeman, and Monty Budwig were west coast masters. They all add to the greatness of this disk. I'll always dig 1950's west coast jazz, and those who say it's not real jazz, are wrong. Shelly Manne swings! This album swings!

Way back in time when I would park myself in front of our GE set down in our Recroom in Bethesda Md., I would look forward to seeing" Peter Gunn" on NBC starting in the late Fifties. Loved the coolness of it all and part of the cool was the jazz group that played at Mothers the place where Pete hung out, Shelly Mann could often be seen in the show as himself the drummer. This album was arranged by Henry Mancini who composed the score for Blake Edwards production of "Peter Gunn". A sextet led by Shelly Mann featuring Russ Freeman on piano and Conte Candoli on horn, this CD swings. It was a successful recording and Contempory Records issued a follow up called ,naturally enough;" Son Of A Gunn". Crazy baby.
