Book Description

November 1, 2010 Baylor Handbook on the Greek New Testament
In his analysis of the Greek text of 1 Peter, Mark Dubis provides students with an accessible guide through some of the most difficult syntactic challenges of the Greek language. Introducing readers to the most recent developments in grammatical and linguistic scholarship, Dubis includes an overview of Greek word order and the construction of middle voice. In doing so, Dubis helps students internalize the conventions of the Greek language while crafting in students a maturing appetite for future study.

Editorial Reviews

Review

For forty years we have been in need of an up-to-date analysis of the grammar and syntax of 1 Peter, and Dubis provides just that. Seminary students will rise up and call this book blessed for a generation. In addition, there s a rich and surprising interpretive history that is unfolded in this slim, packed volume.
--Scot McKnight, Karl A. Olsson Professor in Religious Studies, North Park University

This handbook on 1 Peter deserves comparison with the best of the recent commentaries on that epistle. Mark Dubis has provided students with the tools for evaluating and comparing the exegetical commentaries on which they must rely and will keep commentators honest by reminding them, line by line, of the actual wording and structure of the text.
--Ramsey Michaels, Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies, Southwest Missouri State University

The commentary goes word-by-word through the Greek text of 1 Peter, offering valuable insights into parsing, syntax, and semantics. What Baylor is doing with this series is highly praiseworthy in itself, giving pastors a reference and aid in more complicated areas of Greek that they might have only been able to look at on a surface level in seminary. The primary focus of the series is on syntax and semantics, which makes it quite unique. The commentary definitely requires some knowledge of Greek in order for it to be most useful, but the information that it provides is accessible and understandable for those who are familiar with the language.

Dr. Dubis argues in the commentary for his own syntactical and semantic interpretations of the text, often not only giving you the label but the reasoning behind it. He compares his arguments with the interpretations of others with great charity, noting the strengths of others' arguments while explaining thoroughly why he favors a certain label over all the rest.

In addition, Dr. Dubis has done quite a bit of work on 1 Peter in the past. This means that, in this commentary, he has approached a text that is very familiar to him and that he has spent many years studying; his knowledge of the text shows.

I was very excited when I first heard about this commentary and even more excited when I read it. I highly recommend it for pastors, translators, and commentators who are working on 1 Peter; it will be a tremendously helpful reference.

I completely concur with the comments and recommendations of the previous reviewer. This is only the second in the series, so far, that is not written by Parsons or Culy, and it continues their work with the same level of academic excellence.

In addition to being a superb analysis of syntax, grammar, and discourse, this work includes some of the more recent Greek and linguistic scholarship. Two in particular are notable. First, from Levinsohn and Runge, the concepts of "frames of reference" as focal points, or points of departure, in discourse analysis are very powerful for understanding emphasis and level of importance. Second is the idea that "'deponency' is a misguided label" and modern readers should make a concerted effort to grasp the true use of the middle voice in ancient Greek. Much of this discussion and philosophy derives from the work of Suzanne Kemmer.

For those, like me, who are not familiar with these newer concepts, further reading and thought will be required, but that is the mark of good scholarly work in general.

This was a tremendously interesting and informative book for me and I recommend it highly to anyone looking to improve their understanding and insight into Peter's epistle and New Testament Greek.

This is one of the best resources I have encountered in doing exegesis in the NT. It is a little book, but contributes greatly to the understanding of 1 Peter. In his argumentation of various verses Dubis makes use of current studies in linguistics with regard to the Greek. Specifically, he makes use of the discourse material produced by Stephen Levinsohn, Steven Runge and Kermit Titrud, to name a few.

It is nice to see someone produce a commentary based on the Greek text that is utilizing available discourse studies and not just parroting what other commentaries say. Dubis also interacts with alternative views on a given passage, but gives brief but clear arguments for his particular views.

I would recommend this to any student of the NT.
