Unlike Peter Jackson's magical remake of the classic ape romp, King Kong the video game is sadly disappointing. Combining two gameplay elements, a first person shooter and a third person adventure, King Kong provides a good amount of fun gameplay and actually has some great looking graphics for being a PS2 game, but in the long run the game is too short and too linear,...

This review is from: Peter Jackson's King Kong (Video Game)
Wow what a beautiful game. I am very impressed by the graphics on this one. But what about the gameplay. It is very unique. Most of the game you are a human running around in first person shooter mode. This is pretty cool. Sometimes you will have to look around in the environment to find things to use. An example would be finding a spearlike object to hurl at a t-rex. THis sounds like it would be tough, but it really isn't. While you cock the spear with one hand, your other hand points to where you will throw the spear. THis brings up a very unique aspect of the game. There is no health meter, no reticle for shooting, no ammo readout. NO nothing. You are IN the game just as a real person would be. This helps with the immersion in the game. But what about the Kong Levels? They are way fun and way short. they are probably only about %25 of the game. They are fun though. A little clumsy on the controls, but fun. All in all this is a good game. Not great, but pretty good. You might wait a month and get it half priced used on ebay. Whatever the case, you will be pretty happy with your purchase.

KING KONG is a great game for a lot of reasons. It is tremendous fun for a lot of reasons. There are a handful of flaws, but the goods outweigh the bads overwhelmingly.

First off, the animation is fantastic. The first time you see the T-Rex coming after you, you'll stand and watch in amazement before you realize that you should be running your butt off because you're about to get eaten... and I did.

Not to mention the first time you see Kong emerge from the trees and rip Anne Darrow from the vine pedastal. Awesome! And as you run after him... chasing him through the jungle and see him off in the distance moving through the trees and there's no way you can catch him... cool.

There are numerous times in this game when you'll jump because the attacks are realistic, fast and ferocious. Another great thing about King Kong is the life meter... there is none. I like this. You don't have life packs or health kits... you have to be smart and run... or find a cave that the T-Rex can't get into or a rock formation. As you get bitten or hit... you'll feel it in your remote... the music will change... you'll realize you're dieing and better fight to wield off your attacker, run or accept your fate.

The bads... the dialogue or the storyline is different than the movie and it is very straight-forward and somewhat corny. Also, Anne Darrow aka Naomi Watts is WAY TOO BRAVE!! Here you are running along thinking you're supposed to be protecting her and she is running ahead of you... yelling 'come on' and running head long into a bed of monsters unarmed... then expecting you to save her... frickin' women.

Finally, I've only controlled Kong once... I'm still in the middle of playing... but although the controls are cool... you can beat your chest and let out a roar, swing... swat... rip... catch and bite the heads off of bats... you can do everything you possibly want to... which is awesome! But, the game sort of had a path that Kong HAD TO GO IN... because that was the way it was written... so I kept getting stuck because it looked like I could swing or jump somewhere, but I was supposed to go somewhere else.

Otherwise! This game is tremendous fun! I can't wait until I get to New York City and see what happens there!

5.0 out of 5 stars OMG! THIS GAME ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!, August 16, 2006
A Kid's Review
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Peter Jackson's King Kong (Video Game)
I first got this game on pc, and I was totally ASTOUNDED. My computer's graphics weren't very good - and the graphics still ROCKED! But then I got a PS2... and everything changed. But not in a bad way! In a good way. The graphics were so much better (figures seeing how the PS2 has a video card that will sustain any PS2 game that's thrown at it), and also this console version has CHEATS. Now, that may seem a bit weird to all you non-cheaters out there, but the cheats helped a lot - for example, they helped me practise the levels I was never good at, you know, so I can get better at them. It also helped so I could play the whole game without having to save the game, as I didn't have a memory card when I first got the PS2. Oh, yeah, about the game:

Pros:

- Graphics were EXCELLENT in the PS2 version, and they really made me feel more involved in the game than on the pc.
- This is a really random one, but I thought it was cool how the voices echoed in the caves and tunnels - they didn't do that on the computer.
- Controls were way easier to get used to, on the pc I was used to using the arrow keys instead of W,A,S,D and al the other controls...
- Another really random one, I can lie in bed with the controller in my hand and play KK from across the room :-P
- I loved playing as Kong in the Kong levels. Bashing up V-Rexes is so fun when you just know how to do it correctly...

Cons

- too short. I thought that it could have been a bit longer, you know, more levels - I mean, it's got like, 42 levels - but they're quite short the 2nd time round.
- ummm... please wait while I think about another con
- ok. I can't think about anything else to moan about.

This game can actually be pretty creepy at times. Like, for instance, you have to distract a V-Rex (A really, really, really, really, really, really, really big T-Rex) from eating Hayes and Denham while they open this door thing. You can achieve that by throwing spears at its head, or by shooting it in the nose, or summit... anyway, then when the door is open, you turn to run, with the V-Rex right on your heels, and WHAM - the V-Rex bites you head off. Then there's the Brontosaur level, where you have to run through a Brontosaurus stampede and get some fire while you get attacked by about 10,000 Venatosaurs (really big velociraptors).

Um, I probably shouldn't say too much more, because this is a reall long review, but anyway... you should definitely buy this game if you liked the movie. It really rocks. Two - no - EIGHT THUMBS UP TO THE UBISOFT TEAM!!!!!

i was very surprised how good this game is. the grachics are brillant, very well done, the characters look like the actors in the movie (example; jack black). half of the game is a shooter the other half u play kong, cool, huh? the dinosaurs, king kong, the enviroment, the giant insects are all very cool, except for the flying bat creatures, (the idea is good) i just thought they looked kind of stupid , maybe they should have been pterodactyls instead. everything else is done very well, the story, the voice acting (in which it should be), the pace of the game. excellent, a nice mix of different things to do. in the shooter part of the game, (which is the most part, so far, i haven't finished it yet!) resources are not plenty (bullets, guns) but there are alot of spears laying around. hopefully the movie will be as good as the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars King Kong, February 13, 2006

I know there is a bad review here..... But dont follow that one. It gets frustrating if you are not to good at games. if you get to frustrated do not, i repeat do not quit playing it. It has amazing visual effects, and it is very exciting. The only person who says they dont like the game are people who are bad at it. Oh, and if you keep losing a level, they lower the difficulty. For instince, on the fifth or sixth level two raptors come jumping out at you, and you dont have any guns. if you keep dying, there will only be one raptor. Also you are able to unlock an alternate ending, where you save Kong. I copletely reccomend this game, even if you dont like the movie. I hope this was helpful!

Basically, if you liked the movie, then you'll love the game. I thought the graphics were good, the gameplay was good, and well, I couldn't really find many problems with the game. My favorite thing about it is that it's first person and there is no health bar or ammo meters on the screen which kinda makes the game more realistic. It's the first game I've ever played that's like that. Another great aspect to the game is that there are some levels where you play as Kong, and no matter how good the gameplay is, if you can play as Kong, THAT'S AWSOME!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars King Kong-The greatest movie based video game ever!, January 26, 2006
A Kid's Review
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Peter Jackson's King Kong (Video Game)
When I got King Kong I wasn't expecting much but I soon found out that this is definetly the best movie based video game out there. Everything about it is awesome. The great graphics. The intense sound. And the fantastic gameplay. You should stop reading this review and get it now. A preview about it is that you start out as Jack Driscoll, in a wild forest filled with giant insects and dinosaurs with only a pistol. As you go through the levels you'll go through different enviroments and different weapons, but as you get farther into the game you'll become the legendary Kong! As King Kong the game will completely switch from strategic to all together action as you smash dinos and giant bats and even face of a gainst six or seven V rexes! When you beat the game and get 250000 points you will get the alternative ending which is just like the last level except once you've destroyed enough airplanes as Kong, you'll switch to become Jack in a airplane and try to shoot all of the airplanes and searchlights. Then Kong will climb back down the Empire State Building and you will take him back to Skull Island alive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best looking PS2 game ever!, August 30, 2006
A Kid's Review

This review is from: Peter Jackson's King Kong (Video Game)
Let me start by saying the one bad thing about this game , and that is it is fairly short. However the game looks so great it looks like the xbox 360. The games easy to figure out but hard to master. Also you also have to think to survive. This is because you dont have many guns so if you charge at a group of dinosaurs you will probably get killed when you run out of ammo. Dont think it immposible to survive when you have no gun. You can find spears in many diffrent places. you really have to get help from your team if you want to win. Also when you play as kong you get to have fun. plus you get a ton of unlockable for doing various things. If you dont mind short games buy this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been so much more, April 2, 2006
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Peter Jackson's King Kong (Video Game)
Unlike Peter Jackson's magical remake of the classic ape romp, King Kong the video game is sadly disappointing. Combining two gameplay elements, a first person shooter and a third person adventure, King Kong provides a good amount of fun gameplay and actually has some great looking graphics for being a PS2 game, but in the long run the game is too short and too linear, which is a big disappointment for something that could have been something really special. As you've heard by now, you play as Jack in the first person shooter elements dodging dinosaurs and other monsters on Skull Island; all the while following Jack Black around. This element is fun for a while, but it becomes repetitive after a while as well. The game really kicks into high gear when you are able to play as the big ape himself in a slam bang third person beat 'em up as you swing around, go toe to toe with T-rexes, and beat your chest a lot. As the game winds up, you are Kong again in New York, leading up to it's inevitable conclusion. The sad part is, it doesn't take long to finish the game, and when playing as Kong, how linear the game really is can be seen. It's sad that King Kong is so disappointing in terms of it's length and overall delivery. However, King Kong isn't a bad game at all, and it's definitely worth a rental at least for those looking for a good action game, it's just a shame that it could have been so much more.
