4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad at all, March 23, 2006
By H. Hubbard (California) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I really liked this dvd set. At first I was sceptical because I really don't follow the mainstream media that much and I think it's sad that they would want to make money off a dead guy but these shows were actually very well done.

It started with the huge obesity problem in America. This episode conclusively shows how direct gov't involvement has an effect on our health. It talkes about a concrete connection between the agricultural subsidies being directly used for mostly junk food ingredients. On the one hand you have the surgeon general saying that we should eat more fruits and vegitables, and on the other hand 90 percent of the agricultural subsidies goes for corn, and it's not that nice sweet corn on the cob, it's overwhelmingly used for high fructose corn syrup used in all the prossesed junk foods and for cattle feed to make them heavier for sale. It shows how red meat (which I love), and junk food is subsidized and made easier for our consumption. Another important aspect of this episode was that it covered the propaganda techniques that advertisers use to target your children.

The next episode was done on the history and use of the drug MDMA, or ecstacy. This episode was the most shocking of them all. Without spoiling it I will say that all angles are covered here. Testimony from users, doctors, chemists, therapists, DEA, and cops are all represented here. It covers the chemical properties of what this drug is, and why the government has lied about the effects of it! It goes through the whole history of its inception as a "useless chemical" discovered in 1912 in Germany, to its rediscovery in the U.S. in 1976, to the spread and wide use here in America and abroad. This episode will rivet you to your seat and I promise that you will be shocked at what you will hear!

The next one was on the L.A.P.D. I was not too interested in this one because in my opinion it really didn't cover anything that we don't already know. Bad cops, racism, gangs, etc...

Disc two starts with Guantanimo Bay. I thought this was an eye opening episode and it is very important to preserve our values of justice and compassion. While indeed there are several dangerous people that may belong there; there are also several innocent people being held there without any sort of representation whatsoever. This goes against the very fabric of our society in which we try to spread accross the globe. We should be leading by example. EVERYONE deserves a right to argue their case of whether or not they are innocent. There is plenty of documentation in this episode that shows that indeed there are several innocent people there.

The next one was done on big tobacco. I don't think I need to get too much into the obvious but the most surprising thing that I saw in this episode is how our government dropped the ball in reeling them in and just how influential big tobacco is in Congress. This was also a must see.

The last episode is arguably the most important of all, the attack on our civil liberties. It doesn't matter what side of the fence you are on, we are all losing our liberties in this day and age. Is it justified? How much are we willing to lose? This episode will clearly show how many of the tools, like the 'Patriot' act, were sitting on the shelves already, just waiting for an opportunity to jump at us. This episode is clearly a must see.

In conclusion I would say this set was Peter Jennings at his best, no kidding. I was very surprised at the objectivity presented in these episodes and I would highly recommend seeing it. Jennings has let me down in the past but this DVD set did have a bit of a redeeming effect on his amazing career.

3.0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, if a little ghoulish, October 15, 2005
By Harry Thomas (San Antonio, TX USA) - See all my reviews
Six well-chosen 20/20 spots are on this DVD. It just seems that the video company is a little ghoulish, capitalizing on Jenning's death as a method to sell DVDs. Besides, who is really going to spend money on this (I got an advance copy for my blog) when in all probability, you'll only watch it once?

1.0 out of 5 stars Liberal Media, April 22, 2009
Peter Jennings was the liberal evening news guy for ABC before he passed. Expect liberal overtones throughout on this dvd set. Not very good for an audience looking for fair and balanced.
