Editorial Reviews

Review

"This commentary/collection of sermons has my warm endorsement. I read them, in my daily devotions, over the period of a month and profited greatly. The message of these books is often neglected, and I pray that this volume will go a long way to redress this deficiency."
John C. Chapmanformer director, Department of Evangelism, Diocese of Sydney

"David Helm has an engaging style, all his own. Best of all, he engages with the text of Scripture, with life as it really is, and with the hearts and minds of the lively congregations who first heard and benefited from much of this material."
Dick Lucas, Rector Emeritus, St. Helen's Church, Bishopsgate, United Kingdom, Founder of Proclamation Trust

"David Helm exercises a vibrant preaching ministry in the city of Chicago. This book of Bible expositions displays his strengths as a preacher and serves as a model for other Bible teachers. It is vigorous in its defense of spiritual truth, clear in its explanation of biblical words and their contextual meaning, vivid in its use of language and illustrations, well-structured in its exposition of particular Bible passages, and fresh in its practical application of biblical truth to daily Christian life. It is the kind of commentary, in other words, on which preachers quickly learn to rely."
Philip Graham Ryken, President, Wheaton College

"The single best resource for faithful biblical exposition available today. A great boon for genuine reformation!"
Timothy George, Founding Dean, Beeson Divinity School; general editor, Reformation Commentary on Scripture

"For this outstanding series of expository commentaries, Kent Hughes has assembled a team of unusually gifted scholar-preachers. The series will be widely used and much sought after."
Eric J. Alexander, Retired Senior Minister, St. George's-Tron Parish Church, Glasgow, Scotland

"The Preaching the Word commentary series is one of my favorites. The focus upon explaining a text with preaching it as the goal makes the series resonate with the priorities of the pulpit. No academic aloofness here, but down-to-earth, preacher-to-preacher meat for God's people."
Bryan Chapell, President Emeritus, Covenant Theological Seminary; Senior Pastor, Grace Presbyterian Church, Peoria, Illinois

"I'm delighted to endorse the philosophy behind the series edited by my friend Kent Hughes. Here sounds out the voice not of the scholar in the study but of the scholar in the pulpit. The authors are all able teachers who regularly expound God's living Word to his people. May this rich material give us 'patterns of preaching' that will not only feed the flock, but, by God's grace, change the church."
R. C. Lucas, Retired Rector, St. Helen's Church, Bishopsgate, London, England

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Brian Fulthorp on February 6, 2009
Format: Hardcover
From the inside flap:

Neither Peter nor Jude minced words about the realities that would confront every Christian and that were confronting the church at large--suffering and persecution, contradictory views of the gospel, constant challenges to the faith at the hands of false teachers. Yet even in the face of these harsh realities, both biblical writers unswervingly declared that there is no cause for despair as long as one's foundation and identity are in Christ.

This is a very true statement - Neither Peter nor Jude minced words about what it means to live the Christian life in the world. The messages of 1&2 Peter and Jude are as relevant to the church today as they were in the first century when these letters were written, especially for the USAmerican Church where teachers and teachings abound that play down the role of suffering in the Christian life and what it means to be a committed follower of Jesus Christ, God's Son, in this world.

The Preaching the Word Commentary Series is designed to equip Pastors and Teachers with solid biblically faithful sermonic material in printed form. The Sermons in this series, and so far as I know in this particular book, model expository preaching as it is intended to be: clear, understandable, effective, relevant, and faithful to the biblical text. This series then is really more of a commentary in the form of printed sermons that reflect the work of biblical and critical study more so than as a critical commentary used to build sermons. For the working Pastor, this work would provide good support in constructing a sermon along side a more critical commentary such as Richard Bauckham's still significant WBC work on 2 Peter and Jude.

A part of the series entitled 'Preaching the Word', "1 & 2 Peter and Jude: Sharing Christ's Sufferings "is about being straight about one's faith and how to face the challenges towards God and the gospel on the subjects of contradiction, false teachings, and staying faithful in the face of it all. With tips on how to interpret the Bible to help one's life in the modern era, defending one's faith quickly and sharply, and finding strength in faith. A seminal piece, "1 & 2 Peter and Jude: Sharing Christ's Sufferings" is a top pick for community library Christian studies collections.
