Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-6–This classic tale of the boy who wouldn't grow up, his earthly friends, and their adventures in Neverland is a popular subject for illustrators. This anniversary edition contains the "original unabridged text," but offers nothing unique or fresh. The abundant small illustrations and full-page spreads decorate, rather than enliven, the story. Ingpen's artwork is a combination of line drawings and pen-and-ink and watercolor paintings. Waiflike portrayals of the children and muted, hazy colors create a nostalgic "days gone by" aura. The colors and shading also emphasize the sense of fantasy. Unfortunately, they also create emotional distance. Both the story and characters lack visual energy. Neither the playful whimsy nor the lurking dangers of Neverland come through in the art. The depiction of the battle between Captain Hook's pirates and the Indians is laden with stereotypical images. Libraries needing another version of Peter Pan have plenty of choices, including editions illustrated by Michael Hague, Michael Foreman, Trina Schart Hyman, and Arthur Rackham. This one won't be missed.–Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Library, WI

5.0 out of 5 stars Where dreams are made, July 9, 2005
By
Kelly Clark (Frederick, MD USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Peter Pan And Wendy (Hardcover)
When I was given the choice of several editions of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan, it was this charming anniversary printing, aided by Ingpen's stunning artwork, that won my heart.

Those who expect to see a cartoonish, modern version of the tale ought look elsewhere, but those seeking a timeless illustrated world to accompany this unabbridged telling of the boy who wouldn't grow up, you have found your prize.

Ingpen's illustrations bring to mind what might've been born of what one could imagine as a heart-warmed artist, letting his pencil wander as he was read the story aloud. Never have I seen such a dream-like quality of simplistic, yet elegent artistry paired with Barrie's centarian book.

I see this edition as one that will fascinate and inspire children, not only to dream of Neverland, but to create their own worlds, be they those of ink and paint, or words on a page.

5.0 out of 5 stars High-quality hardcover edition of Barrie's classic Peter Pan, February 3, 2005
This review is from: Peter Pan And Wendy (Hardcover)
Readers seeking a high-quality hardcover edition of Barrie's classic Peter Pan complete with high-quality drawings should look no further than Orchard Books' latest re-issue, pairing Barrie's story with Robert Ingpen's drawings. Color marks both full pages and half pages, adeptly and beautifully highlighting all the unedited adventures of Wendy and the childish Peter.
