Editorial Reviews

What began in 1981 as a benefit for the New York Choral Society has now become a decades-long holiday music tradition. Join Peter, Paul and Mary in their spectacular live concert PBS special, with symphony orchestra and a 200-voice chorus. The concert features a mixture of the trio's iconic folk classics, Christmas and Hannukah songs and carols, traditional spirituals and holiday songs of hope, friendship and peace.

I remember when this was first shown on PBS. I taped it and I did a pretty bad job at it. Plus it was during pledge week as well and that didn't help. Well, I very glad to see it out now on DVD and I can tell you, its a terrific show. PPM did a terrific job with the audience and with their accompanying choir for the show. Every song appers on the CD but it's so much better seeing them singing onscreen. Halfway through the program, they sing many of their favorite non holiday song that we all love. And we sing along with them. I miss shows like this and there arent many of them nowadays. If you get the chance, buy this DVD and watch it with your family and enjoy the holidays with them. Puff the Magic Dragon, would want you too

For those of you that remember this yearly PBS special... it's finally been released on DVD (with no pledge breaks). I've been waiting for the DVD release for many years (the VHS tape wore out).
The video and audio quality are excellent.
My Christmas video collection is now complete.

Peter, Paul and Mary are featured in A Holiday Celebration with full orchestra (conducted by their music director, Bob DeCormier) and backed by the New York Choral Society. It's a rare treat as PP&M didn't often perform with full orchestra or chorus in the background. In addition to Christmas music, the trio performs some music appropriate for Chanukah such as "Light One Candle", "Hayo, Haya" and others. There is also a brief spell of secular music including "Weave Me the Sunshine", "The Marvelous Toy" and "Puff, the Magic Dragon.

This program aired for several years on Public Television.

Whether you love the holiday season, Peter, Paul and Mary, music, or all of the above, this is the concert DVD for you! The beautiful, brilliant blend of acoustic guitars with a symphony orchestra, three-part harmonies with those belonging to an entire chorus, do the performers and the music they articulate 100% justice! Peter, Paul and Mary present heartwarming renditions of traditional Christmas carols ("We Wish You A Merry Christmas", "O Come O Come Emmanuel", "Children Go Where I Send Thee", "O Come All Ye Faithful", "Hark The Herald Angels Sing", "Silent Night", and "Hallelujah" [with a special reprise of "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" to close the show]), reveal uplifting spirituals ("I Wonder As I Wander", "The Magi", "The Friendly Beasts", "Hayo, Haya", and "The Cherry Tree Carol"), as well as integrate their own special magic as a trio [along with being individuals in their own right] ("A' Soalin'", "'Twas The Night Before Christmas", "Light One Candle", "Weave Me The Sunshine", "The Marvelous Toy", "Puff, The Magic Dragon", "Blowin' In The Wind", and "This Land Is Your Land").
This Holiday Concert is truly a gift for audiences everywhere, as Peter, Paul and Mary, the New York Choral Society and Orchestra outdo themselves in their musical merriment to ignite a sense of family, community, and an overall sense of peace and love within their surroundings. The music of Peter, Paul and Mary, as well as the holidays themselves, could not be purer than in this outstanding performance. All you have to do is watch and listen to it once, and it will stay with you forever.

It just wouldn't be Christmas without seeing this special each year. One of my all-time favourites. Now we can view it whenever we want to. Peter Paul and Mary are long-time favourites of mine.

I cannot say enough about this particular Concert/DVD; it has something to offer every one of differing faiths, but that was always the driving force behind Peter, Paul and Mary; "Music with a Message." The Choir shows great diversity; and all their voices combined are what go into making this concert first taped in 1988 so very special. For being recorded Twenty Four years ago its quality has remained intact, no skips or jumps. I highly recommend it to anyone who may not associate PPM w/ the holidays to give it a try; you won't be disappointed.

As a member of the New York Choral Society I had the privilege of singing in this concert. Our conductor was the illustrious Robert De Cormier. We actually taped two different concerts and the PBS tv special was a hybrid of both. We had so much fun with PPM. Mary chatted with the ladies in the chorus in between songs and shared her love of chocolate chip cookies and chopped chicken liver. All three members of PPM were so warm and kind to each of us. Peter's love of mankind is so apparent in each of these songs, One of my favorite tracks from our concert is "Light One Candle" -- I hope it made it onto the dvd! This tv special ran during pledge weeks on PBS for more than twenty years. Each time I here the opening I get goosebumps. It is such a thrill to find it on DVD!!! This is a must for all of you Peter, Paul and Mary fans.
