Editorial Reviews

Peter Sarstedt's debut album was torpedoed by its best track, the number one hit "Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)," an exquisite piece of baroque pop that Sarstedt would never come close to equaling again. Led by a festive accordion and a dark acoustic guitar, the song blended the reserve of early British singer/songwriters with the sophistication of Continental pop -- name-checking everyone from Marlene Dietrich to Sacha Distel and the Boulevard Saint Michel. Sarstedt proved his songwriting talents elsewhere on the record, but the florid arrangements and varying productions never approach the level of its best song. Its successor, As Though It Were a Movie, which arrived shortly afterwards, features no good follow-up to the single, but it's actually a better full-length statement. Based around an imaginary movie (complete with overture, intermission, and closing national anthem), the record finds Sarstedt doing a better job of inhabiting his narrative songs (as on the leering "Take Off Your Clothes"). ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic 60's pop, May 30, 2004

This review is from: Peter Sarstedt / As Though It Were a Movie (Audio CD)
In fact the second disc, As though it were a movie, sounds as if it could have been released yesterday, it doesn't sound at all dated as do some of his contempories listening to them 35 years later. As opposed to all the peace and love trippy music that most of the artists at the time seemed to be involved with Sarstedt wrote about life with all its bitter sweetness. The songs on this album are as strong and as original as any you are likely to find anywhere. He spices his sharp insights on life with a great sense of humour and varied musical styles, though all pop/folk/rock, excelently produced by Ray Singer (whoever he may be!)

The first disc contains the original "Where do you go to my lovely" and the second disc has as a bonus track the great "Frozen orange juice", one of my favourite pop songs from that period. I have another vinyl disc of Sarstedt called PS which is also very good, it's not listed here. It contains the song Beirut. I remember when I bought it I had a record player that let you repeat the record and I remember just letting side one play over and over again.

This review is from: Peter Sarstedt / As Though It Were a Movie (Audio CD)
My parents had these record albums when I was a kid in the 1970s. I'm loving listening to the songs again, and hearing new things. It's a very "orchestral" approach to pop music, with slightly subversive lyrics. I wonder whatever happened to Peter . . .
