Like Carlos points out, this is a gem that really deserves to reach a wider audience. This masterpiece should be introduced to the CD generation as well as to those of us old enough to remember the release. But the record is impossible to track down. The way Chris Spedding (could only have been equalled by Jeff Beck) imitates the Duck using the guitar only is worth the price alone. Spedding isn't the only great musican appearing on this RSO recording. Gary Moore, Alvin Lee and John Goodsall on guitars, Brian Eno, Phil Collins, the sophisticated bass players Percy Jones, Dave Marquee and Andy Pyle, John Hiseman, Bill Bruford and Cozy Powell helping out Collins on drums. Manfred Mann, Gary Brooker... And it works! No show-offs, and suberbly directed by the eccentric Viv Stanshall as narrator. There is a big black hole in my record collection, and it will remain there until I get hold of this record.

I had this version of Peter and the Wolf when I was a child. It's a pleasure to hear it again on CD after all of these years. It was very hard to find-it took 6 months on Amazon. But it was well worth the wait.

This record is an unforgettable meeting of rock stars like Alvin Lee, Phil Collins, and many others, performing the masterpiece of Sergey Prokoviev. The sound is amazing. The arrangements are brilliant. I've been looking for the CD record all around the world, since the 80's when I lost my LP, but, unfortunely, it's out of Amazon stock.

After years of searching for this 1975 gem, I've finally found it on CD!

I found this album in my brother's record collection as a kid and fell in love with it. I was raised on classical music and went to Cincinnati Symphony between 8 and 10 times every year, but my brother was, and is, a professional bass player. He adored Brand X and bought this album since it featured members of that band, most notably by Percy Jones, the fretless bass player. Jaco might get all of the attention for this instrument, but what Percy does with it is spectacular.

Jack Lancaster and Robin Lumley composed several amazing rock interpretations for this: the funked-out "Peter's Theme" with Garry Moore on guitar and Pete Haywood on steel guitar, "Bird and Peter" with Procol Harum's Garry Brooker on synthesizer, "Cat Dance" with Stephane Grappelli on violin, "Grandfather" with Jack Lancaster playing one of the finest baritone sax pieces ever, and "Wolf" with Robin Lumley and Brian Eno on keyboards. The two outstanding rockers are "Cat and Duck" and "Wolf and Duck", in which the whole ensemble rock out in a delirious display of musicianship. Phil Collins and Cozy Powell drum brilliantly throughout and Viv Stanshall's rich voice conveys the storyline without getting in the way of the music.

Of course, this was my brother's album, so I had to leave it behind. As a DJ at WVBR in the mid-80's, I found a copy buried in the back library with several exclamatory reviews written on the cover. WVBR was "Contemporary Hits Radio" format at that point, so I used to volunteer for the 2 - 6 AM shift with the understanding that I could play whatever I wanted.

I love this CD! It really made my child interested in band, and she went on to play clarinet, piano and xylophone in a marimba band! Hearing each separate instrument separately tell a story and convey a character is genius.
