Wonderful Folk Bedtime Lullaby Book and CD,
By May Flower (WI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Peter Yarrow Songbook: Sleepytime Songs (Hardcover)
The traditional folk music that has been around for generations still has a place in the home music collections. Peter Yarrow (of the 1960's band Peter, Paul and Mary) has just recently released two story songbooks titled The Peter Yarrow Songbook: Sleepytime Songs and The Peter Yarrow Songbook: Favorite Folk Songs. Following on the heels of his popular, bestselling Puff the Magic Dragon, these new songbooks are full of multi-generational musical gems.
We love our copy of The Peter Yarrow Songbook: Sleepytime Songs. It is quite impressive and truly a great bargain. A whopper of an illustrated picture book, it includes a corresponding music CD in addition to guitar chord accompaniment diagrams and a section of historical facts about the songs in the back of the book. Twelve lullabies were chosen for the book and the lyrics to each of the songs have been beautifully illustrated by Terry Widener. Many of the illustrations include an image of a sleeping child. The CD is a pure folk recording, with Yarrow and his daughter, Bethany singing accompanied only by two acoustic guitars. Their voices blend wonderfully together in the comforting, lulling melodies. Buy this one to share with children, parents, grandparents, or friends. Few products are appropriate for all generations. This is one of the few.

Our 3 month old LOVES this CD as he falls asleep each night. It's a beautiful, peaceful blend of voices that's perfect for the nighttime ritual of putting baby to sleep.

Beloved lullabies that soothe both children and adults,

Peter Yarrow of "Peter, Paul, and Mary" has compiled a lovely book of beloved lullabies with an accompanying CD that contains 12 songs performed by Peter and his talented daughter Bethany Yarrow. I fell in love with this pair's voices when my preschooler and I listened to their rendition of "Puff, the Magic Dragon" in their children's book of the same name. This songbook has become another firm favorite at our house - the songs are soothing, and my almost 5-year-old who is also beginning to read, tries to sing along to the lyrics and the songs on the CD, which makes this not just a great book of "sleepytime" songs but also a wonderful teaching tool. The price offered here on Amazon is a bargain! The book is in hardcover, which makes it more durable, and the illustrations by Terry Widener are beautiful, with an almost magical, otherworldly quality to them.
Besides the songs, the book also contains tips for those intending to play the songs, and there are also lyrics with chords provided. There is a brief background provided for each song, as well as some information about the author and illustrator. This is a wonderful book of beloved songs and is definitely keepsake quality. Highly recommended!

didn't like,

This review is from: The Peter Yarrow Songbook: Sleepytime Songs (Hardcover)
hated the cd that came with it. the singers don't stick to the original melody or correct time of the music, which makes it really hard to learn and sing along with. and if i did learn it and heard it again from another source I wouldn't be able to sing along because they sing the songs so differently. Maybe that's how "folk" is done, but I still didn't like it. HATED the cd!

We love Peter Yarrow and his songs. The lullabies are great and the pictures are beautiful. We love the CD and my husband, the guitar player, loves that there's tab in the back so that he can learn to play along. Great fun for everyone in the family.

We borrowed this book from the library and our 2 year old just loved it. So we ended up buying one ourselves and several copies as gifts for our friends' children.

This book has wonderful illistrations; Peter Yarrow's voice is compltetly soothing on the CD and best of all my boys love it that i'm able to strum along and sing on my guitar using the simple chord arrangements at the back of the book. I love that I was able to appricate this music as a small child and now pass it on to the next generation
