Book Description

In the wake of a lost War for Independence, Peter Jameson, a young colonel, struggles to protect his tiny patriot state of Rhode Island from the oppression of New Britain, the wealthy British duchy. When New Britain invades and attempts to seize Rhode Island’s newly-discovered mine, Peter finds himself leading his small cavalry against the massive British army. But war becomes the least of his worries when his own men kidnap him and hold him for ransom. Facing certain death, Peter is freed by a mysterious boy who vanishes without leaving his name. Indebted, Peter determines to find his "angel" and reward him. But his rescuer has a secret of his own—he is the exiled rightful heir of New Britain, and he will do anything to keep from being found.

I would consider Peter's Angel primarily a historical fiction novel, but it's also alternate history. The story is set in an alternate North America, featuring a different set of British colonies. Rhode Island is a smaller colony that is required by peace treaty to pay tribute to New Britain, a large, militant colony that's loyal to England.

Synopsis: The story follows Peter Jameson, a colonel in the Rhode Island army and son of Rhode Island's Governor, as he fights oppression from New Britain. Rhode Island is in the process of setting up a mine, but New Britain's leaders want all of the profit from it. A peace-treaty is broken when New Britain invades Rhode Island, seizing the mine. The Governor of Rhode Island has no choice but to surrender the land to the much stronger colony.

The transition of land into New Britain's hands is quite simple, however Peter is kidnapped by three traitors in his own army and held for a ransom that would plunge Rhode Island's citizens into extreme poverty. Hope is far from lost, though, when Peter is rescued by a mysterious boy who won't give his name and won't explain why.

Plot: Plot is a crucial aspect of Peter's Angel. The events in the novel revolve around telling the story of three main characters: Peter, Nathan and Edwin. It's clear that Aubrey carefully chose the sequence of each event in order to achieve a flowing nature that forces the reader to continue reading. Of course, the narration of each character's current circumstances would be ineffective if not for the characterization.

Characterization: I believe characterization to be one of Aubrey Hansen's best traits as a writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep alternate history novel November 8, 2012
I've rounded up from four and a half stars to five for the sake of Amazon. And yes, I should have rounded up and not down.

I was introduced to Aubrey Hansen's fiction with her novella Red Rain. That was a short little adventure that could be read in an afternoon, processed quickly, and replaced on the shelf to be read again.

Peter's Angel is not that kind of book. No, this is a deep story filled with moral dilemmas, imperfect scenarios, impossible choices, and all the stuff that comes with that. Dimensional characters populate these pages. You'll find yourself identifying with characters on both sides of the issues, which is great. That means you're not at all bored by one POV character or another.

And then if that wasn't good enough, there's the clever use of alternate history to really bring this story to life. What if America lost the Revolution? Here's your answer.

Why did I knock off that half star? Because of two nitpicks. First, a history buff like me caught some issues with the alternate history. Overall, it's well done, but two errors drew me out of the story momentarily. And then second, there are a few writing style things that bug me. But none of this is reason to skip Peter's Angel. In fact, I recommend it highly. This is a well-plotted, well-written story, full of compelling questions and characters. I can't wait for the rest of the trilogy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Promising Start November 24, 2012
Peter's Angel
A Novel
By Aubrey Hansen

The story begins in an alternate past in which the rebel colonists failed to gain independence from Great Britain. As a result, all of New England has been turned into a large British duchy with the simple name of New Britain. Ever separatist, Rhode Island has been an independent monarchy for a few decades it appears. After a lost war, the small colony turned kingdom is stuck paying heavy tribute to the British duchy, ruled by a conniving duke who assumed power after the previous royal family was killed. Both parents were killed and a grave made for their son next to them. But now it appears that there may be no body there...
Rhode Island is struggling under incredible taxes, needed to pay the tribute demanded by New Britain, which the wealthy duchy sets at whatever number it likes, having complete military dominance over the tiny kingdom. Luckily for Rhode Island, they have discovered a gold mine under their territory. But now the wealthy duchy grows covetous, and wants in on the gold.
And all along Peter (the titular character) is growing up as the heir to the throne of Rhode Island, and he has a personality that does not mesh well with living under tribute. And to make matters more complicated, he has a developing relationship with one of the royal family of New Britain as well.

The setting, temporally, culturally, and physically, is adeptly described. The author has done considerable research into her subject time-period, it appears, as there are no glaring anachronisms. Physical detail is not of chief concern for the story and neither is it voluminous in the narration.

This was a very enjoyable book. My biggest problem with it was that the second in the series wasn't out when I finished the book, and the author really leaves you hanging. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars A great story.
This was a compelling alternate history that asked the question "what would happen if the British won the Revolutionary War and only Rhode Island remained independent".
