Best beginners' guide,
By
This review is from: Peterson First Guide to Insects of North America (Peterson First Guide (R)) (Paperback)
I have quite a few `bug' guides and the Peterson guides are always my favorite. The drawings are excellent, the writing is clear, and I like the behavioral and collecting notes added. There are more flashy guides with more pictures but they tend to be more limited - you can only put so many pictures in a book. They also usually cost much more. This is the book I would buy for someone wanting to learn more about the entire insect world and begin identifying the bugs they find. If their interest grows I would simply move up the full version of the same book.

Perhaps the best field guide to the insects of North America,
By Hallstatt Prince (MA. USA) - See all my reviews

This is a great book for both the beginner as well as those who are at the intermediate level of their study of insects.
It makes for a good first exposure to the taxonomic key. I professor who I knew who taught entomology at Loyola University in Chicago had this book as one of the course texts for his students. I am sure he is not alone. Illustrated with both line drawings and photographs it is the standard work on insects of North America.

This is a great book for common name identification of a wide variety of insects. However, I could not find any scientific names; not even the names of the different orders or families.

Like to know what knid of insect that was but all those big heavy books are a pain to carry. This little book is just the thing for your walk or trip. It is easy to look up an insect with over 200 common insects of North America inside. It makes a great gift too, kids or adult will all enjoy this handy little book. Don't get just one!

Great Reference Guide,
This review is from: Peterson First Guide to Insects of North America (Peterson First Guide (R)) (Paperback)
I am always curious what things are, bugs, birds, etc., and this guide works great for me. There are larger, more complete guides available, however, I have yet to find a bug I couldn't find in this text. It is small and lightweight, perfect for camping or a hike in the woods. It fits great in my glove box where it stays for fast identification.

My daughter was turning 9 when I bought her this book, she loves it. She is always using it to look up bugs. we take it to the lake, hiking, and camping. I wish I would have bought it sooner. Great colorful pictures, descriptions, and easy to carry size.

I bought this for a grandson who likes all insects along with the guide to reptiles, which he got earlier. Based on his happiness with that, I bought this one.

This is not the full version of the peterson's guide, but it is nice and light to carry with you while collecting.

Not what I ordered,

This review is from: Peterson First Guide to Insects of North America (Peterson First Guide (R)) (Paperback)
I thought I had ordered the original guide for the same price but was sent this book. Unfortunetly I had thrown out the invoice and did not realize until a few days later that it was a kids book. So I reordered the book I really needed for my class, as a reference book.
