Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-12-- An excellent, upbeat handbook for those who want to improve the world by volunteering. The first part deals specifically with needs in such areas as environmental welfare, animal care, cultural and sport activities, and helping people in a variety of settings. This is followed by a selection of approaches to the problems, quotes from volunteers, some hard-hitting facts to substantiate the need, and a list of groups to contact for more information. Part two helps readers select the right volunteer job by examining personal concerns, abilities, and interests. The third part is a state-by-state sampling of associations that accept teenage volunteers. There are no photos or drawings of young adults in action. Similar books are Kathy Henderson's What Would We Do Without You? (Shoe Tree, 1990), which gives more details on the procedure for contacting organizations and has some ideas for younger children as well as teens, and Sara Gilbert's Lend a Hand (Morrow, 1988). A positive tone of determination, hope, and respect permeates this entire book, and numerous quotes from the volunteers give it a personalized touch. --Diane P. Tuccillo, Mesa Public Library, AZ
