Whatever crackhead amazon has posting the samples mixed things up, not the first time. Go to cduniverse.com to hear the real samples to this ill CD.

3.0 out of 5 stars Smooth but un-original
This is perhaps the purest hip-hop beatstumental album ever dropped. Pure in the sense that that whole album ( except two tracks ) features hypnotic, head-nod inducing loops that doesn't stray from familar pastures. Down-tempo and bass heavy with the occasional horns, there is no mistaking that this is hip-hop, not trance, not ambient, not lounge, but back to the basic...

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Hip-Hop Music, March 24, 2003
This review is from: Petestrumentals (Audio CD)
This is probably one of the best Cd's i've herd in a while. The Instrumentals are so nice i can't decide if i'd rather have an MC rhyme on it or not, they just stand out so well on there own. Plus when they do step to the mic the lyrics aren't just thrown down. Even the small interludes between tracks are superior beats. Well crafted piece of art by Pete Rock.

The Real reason i'm writing this review is to inform anyone who is interested in this CD. After checkin up on things there is a second version of this that was released. At this time it is not avalible on Amazon.com.
In my opion it is a better CD, it contains all the tracks listed above except Hip Hopcrisy, Give It to Y'all, and What You Waiting For. These tracks (excluding Hip Hopcrisy which is excellent) are the weakest ones on the original. These tracks are replaced with one new instrumental (Take The D Train) and three new tracks with MCs Nature, Freddie Foxxx, and a CL Smooth reunion. The Nature song is pretty good (i wish i coulda had Hip Hopcrisy back though) and Freddie Foxxx rips the mic to accompany some blaring horns and painos. The CL Smooth track (Back on The Block) more than worth getting the second version and drives me crazy that these guys don't hook up for a full album again.
Regardless, either version of this album is worth getting. Hopefully Amazon.com will make the second version availible soon, but if not check out information about the label (given above) to see what you can do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazon Editor did a really wack job reviewing, March 20, 2004

As an MC and part time producer I find the editor's review of this album disgraceful.

"You never quite realize how monotonous and downright boring hip-hop tracks can be until you remove the lyrics and are subjected to four minutes of the same bars looping over and over."

Are you serious? This guy is basically generalizing all hip-hop beats and we're supposed to trust his review of a hip-hop album?

If you are not a hip-hop head what would you ever be doing buying a cd of instrumentals? This cd (like any cds of instrumentals) have their purpose and this happens to be a sick cd. Pete Rock is a legendary producer, one of the founders of modern hip-hop, any one will agree with this.

Wang's suggestion that the beats are "simple sonic scores" is offensive. This guy is ridiculous, why would amazon ever have someone who seems to know nothing review and album like this? Get rid of this guy ...

(Cake is a sick song)

5.0 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY A CLASSIC !!!, August 28, 2002
This review is from: Petestrumentals (Audio CD)
I have been a Pete Rock fan since his days with CL Smooth. And hearing his solo album SOUL SURVIVOR in 1998 ressurected the life in Hip-Hop once again. But on PETESTRUMENTALS, Pete Rock shows you what he is really capable of. Really great bass lines, all sorts of horns on the background and kicking drum patterns are what makes up this classic brew of Hip-Hop. Yes, every track on this CD is great, which is very hard to find nowadays. STANDOUT tracks include : A LITTLE SOUL, SOMETHING FUNKY, PETES' JAZZ, THE BOSS, GIVE IT TO YA"LL, CAKE ( ft. The U.N. ), NOTHIN' LESSER ( ft. The U.N. ) and the two gems on this album which I can't take one over the other because they're so perfect, FOR THE PEOPLE and WHAT YOU WAITING FOR. PETESTRUMENTALS will leave the commercial rap fans sleepy with this release because of the lack of lyricist on the songs. But most of these instrumentals don't need a vocalist on the track simply cause it might ruin how great the beat is and leaving it as an instrumental will ensure its' longevity. PETESTRUMENTALS ( though an instrumental LP ) really beats the MTV, BET, radio rap thats out by far. Definitely one of my top 10 favorite Hip-Hop albums of all time. Pick this CD up fast cause you won't be disappointed. WARNING !!! FOR TRUE BEAT JUNKIES ONLY !!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Soul Brother #1 shows you why he is Soul Brother #1!!!, November 29, 2001

He is one of my favorite producers of all time!!! Pete Rock is one of the founding fathers or I should say, is one of the blueprints in hip-hop production. Pete's BBE album is pure delight to the ears. He knows what to do, by adding and blending right amount of jazz, and soul loops to hard kicks and snares that he programs on his trusty SP-1200! Famous for his horn loops (his signature), you definetly know it's Pete Rock when you hear it. And on this album, it's there but he has more sounds to complement it and sound so different. You can tell that he has matured more in his beat making (like he wasn't already!) Most of his tracks are instrumentals except for 2 which I think is hot also. The UN - the MC group he has on both tracks do their thing. Hopefully we will hear more of them alongside Pete in future projects. Anyway, his album is good for just chillin' at home relaxing, or taking a long drive with the system blasting!! If you are into production like I am, this album is for you. Get it!! Pete doesn't disappoint and he's still Soul Brother #1!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars # 1 SOUL BROTHA, May 4, 2001
This review is from: Petestrumentals (Audio CD)
My first taste of "The Beat Generation" was the Jay Dee - Welcome to Detriot release. Now my second taste is from "THE #1 Soul Brotha" Pete Rock. (I'm writing this as "for the people" plays in the background) You can't complete an alltime top 100 hip-hop list with out mentioning this kat. Besides making phat beats, Pete Rock makes tight music. Offering deep crate diggin jazz samples, this CD gives it to ya in raw, beats galore form. Some tracks can pretty much set the mood for anything, anywhere. Pete Rock is a GOD in the hip-hop underground world, on the levels of DJ Premiere of GangStarr and much respected too. Everytrack is banging and will put you in a head nodding hypnosis.

Hip-Hop is still struggling in my opinion for real talent to show the true meaning of MC'ing. But until then, I'm cool with just listening to phat beats from kats like PeteRock, JayDEE, DjKrush, K&D and countless others. Besides, 95% of MC's ain't saying jack' anyway.

Cop This CD....

Oliver Wang, obviously doesnt listen to Hip Hop that much, if he did then he would know that its ROOTS are the beats, and samples. This CD is amazing, Im still tring to find where he got these beats from!!! As a Hip Hop producer, I always look for key samples and beats that make them stand out, and Pete will not let you down..Beat Junkies, DJs, and those who love hip hop beats, this is for you.

Pete Rock has done it again. Regardless of who is putting down the vocals, if Pete is behind the boards it's bonafide, dope, true hiphop music. Pete Rock IS hiphop music. This CD is great for putting on the background or freestyling to yourself in your car. If you have a short attention span or think that "Lil Romeo" is hophop this probably isn't for you. If you like this check out the other CD's in the BBE series like Jay-Dee's "Welcome to Detroit".

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Gem from BBE's Hip Hop Producers series..., May 2, 2001
This review is from: Petestrumentals (Audio CD)
First there was Jay Dee's "Welcome to Detroit", which had relatively played thug lyrics that were trashed by the masses. Yes, they weren't the best rhymes, but there were moments of multi-syllabic street-ness in them. With Pete Rock's "Petestrumentals" there are barely any vocals, most of this is simply Pete's beats. Jazzy stuff for the crate digging masses out there, this is great stuff to put on whether you're sitting back with a blunt after a hard day at work, or even to freestyle over. The MC's that do lay their vocals down on this are the collective known as the UN, and while there could have been more of them on this album, this is still a great look into Pete Rock's work, and what's even better is that it whets our appetites for the next full length solo from Pete. Well done, BBE, so far you're 2 for 2!
