I spent the past year learning French and found this book at a local bookstore. It is HYSTERICAL! It has made learning and maintaining French truly an enjoyable experience. There is so much wonderful humor in this book. I am excited to learn there are more in the series. The situations are funny, nothing is too precious, the kids seem to act like real kids and those poor adults...! I wish I could find an English version to send to my nephew. This is great reading and if you disagree, je vous donnerai une claque!

Having recently moved to France from the UK I bought this book to help my children learn French. That was the idea. And I'm sure they will like the stories - when they get to see them - because for the moment I am working my way through the book. It is a delightful read, easy vocabulary for a beginning French speaker, and the humour keeps you interested. The book is in the form of a series of self-contained stories told by Nicolas about the group of friends (les copains), each of whom has his own characteristic foibles. I say "his" because being boys of that age they don't like girls, and in one story the rest of the friends are horrified that Nicolas invites his female neighbour for gouter! The humour is also subtle enough in many places that adults will see things that children miss, but the observations of life are very accurate indeed. There were four other books in the series written by Goscinny, and I think they will have to be next on the reading list.

I too found this book at a (used) bookstore and immediately fell in love with the characters, however oblivious they are of the trouble they cause. And the french is definitely navigable by even the lowest-level speakers!

I began reading the Petit Nicolas books while living in Paris. The stories are delightful and easy to read. They appeal to both children and adults. My 10 year old and my 15 year old love them as much as I do. While reading one of the books on the Metro, a fellow passenger made a point of commenting on the book and how much she had enjoyed it herself. Nearly everyone I met was familiar with these books. The series is a French classic, yet still pretty accurately depicts French school life as my sons experienced it.

Read it in French if you can! There is a
good translation out there too. But the
original is unbeatable!

It's guaranteed the entire series of "Petit Nicolas" can bring you all the joy / laughters / tears (joyful one) + a total satisfaction. You never have enough after reading and always want to read it again and again. Try the original French version for it's using the "easy understanding" child French. Vive "Petit Nicolas"! J'adore Goscinny Sempe!!!
