Editorial Reviews

This incredibly talented trio of Québec musicians and dancers has taken the world by storm. Their first album, “Matapat”, was nominated for a Juno award, and continuous touring and airplay has spread their infectious music far and wide. Like their first album on Borealis Records, “Petit fou” features imaginative arrangements of traditional and original instrumental tunes, and fantastic renditions of traditional French Canadian songs. While the band shows a healthy respect for the tradition, they continue to push the boundaries of the genre by incorporating elements of jazz, celtic, and world music. Highlights include the contagious “Le champ de pois/Le reel des cent larmes”, the hurdy-gurdy/slap-bass arrangement of “La jolie Rochelle”, the Arabic influenced “Sire le roi”, and the unbelievable fusion of French Canadian music with classical Indian tabla and vocals on “La vielle galope”. Produced by Bill Garrett, Simon Lepage, and Matapat, this album is sure to cement their reputation as three of today’s finest contemporary interpreters of traditional French Canadian music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Matapatta-yay!, January 12, 2012
By
This review is from: Petit fou (Audio CD)
Listening to this music makes me happy. After discovering Matapat on The Rough Guide to Canada, I decided to try one of their CDs, so 'Petit fou' is my first Matapat CD -- and I was hooked after the first few songs.

Take a listen to:
Un P'tit Soulier, Madame
Par Un Dimanche Au Soir
Charmante Sylvie - Pont De Vie
La Jolie Rochelle

...Though all the songs are melodic, with good soft beats, and nice lyrics (well, I don't really speak much French, but it sounds nice).

In addition to Matapat I would recommend Dany Brillant, the Radio Folklore collection, and Equation. Matapat's folkish style with the variety of instruments is easy on the ear, pleasant to listen to, and it makes me want to dance. I look forward to trying more of their music!

I was so happy when I heard there was a new Matapat CD out, and I was not disappointed when I picked up a copy. These guys are great musicians. I am a particular fan of the accordian player, his style is lovely. There are several toe tapping tunes on this CD. Another great example of French Canadian music. I highly reccomend it.
