The rake on my set lasted one use before it broke.
Samara Price
The handle comes in three pieces which screw together, and in turn, screw into the rake, and it broke where one section screws into another.

Works great, and I like the fact that you can put a plastic grocery bag inside for easy clean up.

The design of this device it really remarkable. I love that you can reuse store grocery bags to have an efficient and clean way to clean up messes. The material felt sturdy at first too. It comes in gun metal grey and has a little "clink" to the tap. I thought it was metal at first. Upon closer inspection it is plastic, and weak plastic at that. The rake on my set lasted one use before it broke. I assumed I had over tightened that joint, and I continued to use it while holding it lower down. It only took one extra week of use before every joint had broken on the rake and the bucket extensions. I could still hold the bucket to the floor and scrape poo into it, but the whole point was to keep a clean yard while not breaking my back bending over or having to go around to pick up poo in individual baggies. I really wish someone would come along and make this a sturdier product. As I said, the architecture is definitely on the right track and this unit is unique in what it was trying to offer, but it was a waste of money. It is one of the few purchases I definitely regret of late.

I used mine twice then on the third time of use it too broke at the joint of the extented handle on the pan. Now I see the reviews that I didn't see before and am really pissed off! Ripped!

Man, I can't believe I'm reviewing a pooper scooper! But I guess I feel compelled to say it's a mystery how other folks manage to break theirs so easily. This product is heavy duty and well made. Parts of it are made of a plastic which, if rendered cold enough to get brittle, might break under great force. But force like that is unnecessary.

We use it 2-3 times per week cleaning up after a dog weighing sixty pounds so it's definitely getting a workout. Despite being rather blunt, the rake works great for both fresh and older "pies". Unlike a shovel, it rakes through taller grass and digs up even those dried-stuck pies. Being plastic, it rinses off easily.

The swivel bin is cleverly designed to hold open a plastic grocery bag, well secured by its handles looping over hooks on each side of the bin. I advise double bagging since those bags frequently have little holes in the bottom. The bin is large enough to easily scoop at least a dozen pies before it needs to be reloaded with new bags.

It is easy to remove full bags and tie them closed by the handles, making an acceptable "as is" package for a trash can. It does take a little practice initially to learn how to place the bin as close as possible to the targeted pie but until one gets the hang, the rake just does a little more raking.

Both tools are a length that requires a wee bit of stooping but no more than I would do for putt putt golf. After rinsing off the rake (the bin usually doesn't need cleaning because the bags cover it), it clips neatly together and hangs on a wall hook in our garage. Now if it just scooped on its own like some kind of yard roomba, I'd give it five stars ;)

When I went to purchase a pooper scooper, I saw this set and was quite taken with the innovative design. As it appeared to be well made (metal handles) and was quite ingenious, I decided to spend the extra money to buy this set. Big mistake!

The concept is great. I love the idea of being able to use plastic garbage bags to easily dispose of the waste. I love the fact that the handles snap together to keep it neat. It appeared to be well made, so for these reasons I decided to pay a premium price for this product. But I soon discovered there are serious flaws in the design.

I have one small dog. The third time I went to use it, the handle on the rake snapped apart at the first joint from the bottom. I now have a receptacle and what amaounts to a 6" rake, meaning I have to bend clear down to the ground to scoop the poop.

After reading all the complaints on here and realizing it was a design flaw and not just a fluke, I immediately went to the Petmate website. Using their "contact us" link for warranty issues, I sent an explanation of what I purchased, how long I had it and what happened to it. It said I would get a response within 5-7 days. It didn't happen. I used the same site and contacted them again. Another week passed and no response. This company is abosolutely unresponsive to their customers. A company who will not stand behind their product is a good company to stay away from. I will definitely think twice before purchasing another PETMATE product.

My only recourse now is to return it to Petsmart where I purchased it. Hopefully they will stand behind the products they sell better than the manufacturer did.

In addition to what everyone else has said about the thing being junk, the plastic isn't uv protected, so even if it holds up at first, it won't for long. A little sun will make it incredibly brittle. It did not last two years for me. Junk!

Great concept; bag inside the scoop! Clean and easy!
BUT, the plastic handle on both the rake and the scoop broke after 3 uses.
Poorly made. Would have been great if the handle had metal threads to hold it together, not plastic.
What a let down.
