Petra departed from its normal routine of churning out a studio album every year to visit the arena of praise and worship. Aren't we glad they did? Although there have been a number of well-known praise and worship albums preceeding this one, Petra turned the industry on its ears by releasing "Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out."

The CD begins with an original tune, "I Love the Lord", that sets the standard for the remaining 13 cuts on the album. "King of King" and "Jesus, Jesus, Glorius One" continue the rock anthems of praise. Things slow down a bit with reverential covers of "The Battle Belongs to the Lord" and the beautiful "Take Me In." "Salvation Belongs to Our God" is well covered and also enjoyed a great deal of airplay on Christian radio. The other original tune, "The King of Glory Shall Come In", rocks on, but it reminds me a little of Handel's "Messiah: No. 31 Chorus" ("Lift up your heads, O ye gates" (Ps. 24: 7 - 10)). We continue with rocking renditions of a three-song medley ("No Weapon Formed Against Us", "I Will Celebrate/When the Spirit of the Lord") and the energetic "I Will Sing Praise". "Hallowed Be Thy Name" sounds like a lovely heartfelt prayer. "Friends (All in the Family of God)" is a fun song done in a catchy 50-ish pop style. "I Will Call Upon the Lord" and "We Exalt Thee" provide a climatic end that can be easily sung along with by anybody.

Petra does justice to the songs they cover, plus the new songs are worshipful too. Add this to your Petra collection along with "Petra Praise 2: We Need Jesus", and then visit Third Day's "Offerings" and City on a Hill's various artist project. You will be praising God all day long!

This is an awsome album when it comes to praise music! This is the first of 2 praise albums that petra released. I have heard both but this one is still my favorite. Petra has had alot of good stuff in the past. The rock beat they have always had and the impresive ballards is what makes this album what it is. In case you have never heard John Schlitt, he has an incredible vocal range (4 octaves )He was formerly the lead singer for the secular rock band Head East till he became a christian!!!!

When you hear this album you will see that petra is a real rock band rockin for christ and has 25 years to prove it!!!!

Though I am a huge fan of all Petra's praise albums, this one still holds a special place in my heart. It was the first rock praise album of its time and laid the ground work for the hot trend of today's praise albums.

It still amazes how much I feel the Lord in this album. It is a perfect album to introduce youth groups to Petra that do not know anything about them.

A must have for all. This album takes you from a upbeat rock sound that makes you want to sing,shout, and dance; to a solemn heartfelt harmony that will force you to raise your hands and recieve God's blessings. The harmony, melody, and instruments will move you. Carries a message and the love of God in every song, verse, and note. It will definitely move you.

The previous poster displays a total lack of understanding for Petra's mission -- To make a joyful noise unto the Lord, nothing less. To take the traditional praise offering and add the power of explosive, rock sounds to it makes this one of their best albums EVER. Buy it, then get on your knees and fight like a man!

I bought this CD as my mother and I had heard the music for "Take Me In" on another site and we were glad to see the CD was available. Since receiving it and listening to the other songs also, I think it is money well spent. I intend to buy other Petra CDs as I can afford them. God bless them and encourage them.

I remember when I had this same album on cassette, I played it so much that it wore out. Petra Praise remains one of my favourite groups. Highly Recommended

I managed to buy one of the last available copies of this on amazon, and I have to say I love it. I owned a copy of "More Power To Ya" back when it first came out, and always loved that as well, so I bought this without hearing it.

It's good classic rock with nice harmonies and back-up singers and a good collection of songs. I recognized at least half of the songs and had no trouble in learning to like the other half.

I wish the group was still producing albums. Not only are they great musically, but they also seem authentic and spiritually strong to me.

1st released in around '89/'90...

... My 1st Christian CD- this record is still amazing! It's been with me since high school, college, and beyond. RIAA certified Gold; Petra's 1st praise CD- there's even a spanish version- this record is experiencing a renewed popularity thanks to the Internet (which wasn't even in popular use back when this CD was first released!). It's even available now at places like iTunes, although getting the physical CD is still best. This has been an all-time favorite for years(!)- now too along with Greatest Hits, the incredible greatest hits CD by Newsboys (can't they share that same pedestal? Yes! :)). Kind of a blend between '80s guitar rock & regular Sunday morning worship, many words come to my mind when describing Petra's Praise: energetic, light, airy, creative, inspirational, scriptural, rock- and of course, worship and praise. Tastes in music change, but this record remains popular because of its strong biblical content. Created especially for today's youth, some of the songs are from specific instances in Scripture, and actually relate the basic story. Overall, even with electric guitars, it's still pretty tame-sounding by today's standards: it isn't exactly Toby Mac's "Slam"(!), yet it's still a great rock-praise CD! The most energetic tracks include: "I Love The Lord", "Jesus, Jesus, Glorious One", "No Weapon Formed Against Us", "I Will Sing Praise", and then "I Will Call Upon The Lord", which is live. This CD is well-balanced, mixing fast & slow tracks, ending beautifully with the highly reverent "We Exalt Thee"- which is also live. 14 tracks- 12 studio; 2 live. My other favorites include "King of Kings", "The Battle Belongs To The Lord", and "Salvation Belongs To Our God"- all great! Especially great is the inspirational CD booklet included! Today, sadly :(, it's sometimes replaced with a single-sided photo insert, presumably to save on the cost of production. That's too bad(!): Best. CD. Booklet. Ever! It contains all the song lyrics, 3 great little black-and-white (sometimes color) photos of Petra in the desert, and details on band members, instruments, and the inspiration behind the CDs creation. What a great CD!

This was one of the first Christian CD's that showed me that Contemporary Christian didn't have to mean boring or cheesy! Full of praise choruses, this CD has hard-driving guitar and awesome bass. It's the style of music lots of people like, but with a positive message!
