I was born and raised in the area known as the Lower Rio Grand Valley of Texas...This is a wonderful history that clears up many misconceptions about the development of the area between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande River, the present border with Mexico in the years between 1847-8 (the U.S war with Mexico) and the early 1900s...the Kennedy's and the King's were major players in settling the area for future waves of Anglo settlers. This history is or was not taught in school when I grew up (1950's to early 60's), but oral history abounded, much of it inaccurate. The wealth and power and legacies these two family's created still rings loudly in South Texas.

I loved this book. I am fascinated with the lives of Captain Mifflin Kenedy, his wife Petra-Vela Vidal Kenedy and their descendant's. If you enjoy Rich Texas History, then this is your book to read. These people were tough survivors of this Wild Horse Desert.

I recommend this book to history teachers and everyone who has ancestors that were settlers of Texas. It should be required reading in Texas schools. Even though it shows how most of the original Mexican/Spanish settlers lost their land, it gives the readers an idea of how hard it was for everyone at that time period to live in those rough times and for ranch owners to run a ranch. It is definitely not fiction and I could not put the book down after I started reading it. Lillian Wold

That pretty much says it all... Was the land a blessing a burden? I'm not sure it wasn't the times, but they sure had their fair share of tragedy...

Great Book!

Great book on one of Texas's largest cattle kingdoms and the history of the settlement of the Nueces Strip.

The King Ranch has always been interesting. There were so many 'children' - hers and theirs and it was confusing. I had to get pencil and paper and try to make a family tree to keep everyone straight. it would help if one was included in the book. The information it contained was interesting.
