Nearly 200 melodies collected by Petrie along with song texts in Irish and English and detailed notes about each melody's source,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Petrie Collection of the Ancient Music of Ireland (Hardcover)
First published in 1855, The Petrie Collection Of The Ancient Music Of Ireland is widely considered one of the most important nineteenth-century collections of traditional Irish music, containing nearly two hundred melodies collected by Petrie along with song texts in Irish and English and detailed notes by Petrie about each melody's source. This new edition contains all of Petrie's original text, the melodies, his introduction, and a new biographical essay that places the collection in the context of Petrie's life and accomplishments in the field of Irish traditional music. The piano accompaniments written by Petrie's daughter and included in the first edition have been removed, in order to restore the melodies to their original form, and the Irish spelling of the text has been standardized according to modern guidelines. A uniquely valuable, scholarly addition to Irish folk music and reference shelves.
