Editorial Reviews

With this groundbreaking 2 DVD set, world class drummer and educator Pat Petrillo has created a complete program that will teach you how to read rhythms in beginning to advanced levels! Play along with Pat as a digital pointer guides you through each on-screen example, with a click track provided. By using Pat's proven "Sound Picture" method of associating how each rhythm looks with how it sounds, you will become a better, more confident reader. Also included is a 105-page e-book, and MP3 clips of each example! Topics include basic rhythm notation; quarter, eighth, and sixteenth note combinations; all dotted rhythms and rest combinations; syncopation notation combinations in "straight" and "swing" interpretations; all triplet rhythm combinations; common and odd time signatures; and codas and repeats. Never before has there been such a comprehensive notation-reading package presented in a DVD format. It's the reading boot camp that comes with a teacher!

the package that you pay for (for only a little more than the price of one lesson with any local drum teacher) gets you two DVDs which are interactive. The lessons are very well graduated. and you even get MP3s and a truly excellent 100 page ebook on the 2nd DVD.
Each example that Pat plays and counts over (with a moving Red arrow to show where he is) is played at a two tempos (Tempi?? reminds me of that great larson gag with the octopus at the podium)
One to clearly understand what is going on, and one more challenging and faster one to get the sound into your ear.
This is the kind of material with aspects that can become baffling when it's only in written form. Just having the whole audio-visual thing going on is enormously helpful because Pat demonstrates by talking about it i.e explaining, showing it, playing it and (most importantly) counting it correctly out loud.
You can replay each example as many times as you like. It's critical you get this as the DVDs are more like software than say the other drum DVDs you may own. They have buttons on the screen for skipping to the next section and for replaying the previous section. These navigation features are enormously useful/helpful.

I'd be amazed if you really applied yourself diligently by watching the demos, then playing along, then printing the ebook and practicing that, if you didn't really get over any mental block (you may have had) with the sheer abstraction of turning these ink blots into accurate playings of rhythm.

so far, it has cleared up many areas of confusion for me, particularly how to count with syncopation and ties...

It's strange to me that this appears to be the only DVD on the market to tackle this subject, there are many books, but they are quite confusing.

I studied with Pat at The Collective, and this is exactly what we learned. This is the easiest way to learn to read rhythms quickly.
I now teach this method to all my students. I currently teach 41 students a week and they all have benifited from the sound pictures concept that Pat uses. It just works. I will be recommending this DVD to all of my students and all the teachers I know. This is simply a full curriculum for learning to read rhythms fast. Pat is a good guy, and great teacher, support him by picking up this product. YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!!

I'm an old guy who has played drums for many, many years, but had very limited reading skills until now. This DVD is the answer. Pat's system gets to the heart of reading in a very clear and concise manner. AND, I'm learning that being able to read will allow me to up my game significantly. Buy it! You will not regret it. Thanks Pat!

I just finished watching MOST of Pat Petrillo's new DVD, "How to Read Rhythms...Better" and it is everything it claims to be- a comprehensive, concise visual explanation for reading rhythms! Pat's patience and attention to detail facilitates his logical progression from the basics to complex rhythms. Plentiful exercises at various tempos and with a novel note pointer give the viewer lots to practice. This DVD would best be suited for anyone that was afraid to learn how to read rhythms (or afraid to admit so!) as well as Intermediate drummers looking to firm up their reading foundation. Teachers should find this DVD to be useful to study how an experienced teacher such as Pat explains reading topics, and could well use the video, or parts of it, with young students for reinforcement or as a change of methodology. I highly recommend this work which will leave you saying, "Why didn't I think of creating this!"

For all of you cats who have studied, stumbled, and couldn't really get the flow, this DVD is awesome! Man, all you really have to do is follow the bouncing ball! Finally a method to get that continuity and flow going without all of the technical hocus pocus. I really love it. My reading has really become second nature to me now. It kind of lifts the notes off the page and makes them speak to you. What's so great is that you can do it at your own pace, you can stop, start over, repeat, and you don't have to advance until you know you're ready, then just click and move forward. Can't wait to meet you in person, Mr. Petrillo, to personally thank you for helping out struggling readers like I was.

This is what I've been waiting for:an instructional video that WALKS me through notation without ASSUMING I automatically know what it is.And since it is so well-paced,it keeps me motivated to continue;VERY accomodating.Although I had a working knowledge of all of the information provided in the intro,I was still intrigued as it was all communicated so well and concise. This product has inspired me to better myself as both a player AND teacher;thank you SO MUCH,Pat!

This is the most EDUCATIONAL DVD (s) I have ever purchased. IN 1 WEEKEND, I completely understand how to read all 16th note rhythms, and I am moving onto syncopation! The fact that I can replay each clip immediately for constant reinforcement is genius. What an AMAZING reading product guide for any instrumentalist, not just drummers. It truly is a "Reading Boot Camp"....and Pat's teaching ability and communication skills are the best. 'Rosetta Stone" for reading indeed!!
