1.0 out of 5 stars FULL OF SUGAR!
After using a similar brand (CET) for almost a year and noticing how our dog's teeth were actually worse, I did some research and found out that two of the main ingredients are Sorbitol which is a alcohol sugar and Destrose which is made from honey & sweet fruits. Brushing is wonderful but all of us know how brushing sugar into our own teeth is not a good idea so why...

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what is promises, August 25, 2007
I've been brushing my dogs teeth for the last 9 years (her whole life), every single day. I've used natural, artificial, and vet recommended toothpastes. The bottom line is, this toothpaste above all, truly does what it claims to do. The problem with all the other toothpastes that I've used for my dog (and I've tried every kind at PetsMart and those given to me by the Vet (I think it was CET)), is that they only prevent at a mild pace the build up of tartar and other nasty stuff on the teeth, and that's only if you brush every day pretty vigorously. As my vet put it, dog toothpastes are meant to slow down the build up of tartar and cosmetic problems like yellow teeth, not prevent or reverse it (that's why they recommend their own very expensive, under anesthesia, teeth cleaning).

I noticed that whenever I switched away from Petrodex Enzymatic Toothpaste to another one (especially the natural ones), within just a month, my dog's teeth would become markedly yellowed and tartar would begin to build. I'd panic, and switch back to Petrodex. Again, within a month, they'd be as white as a 1 year olds teeth (clearly reversing previous buildup). I've run through this cycle of changing pastes from Petrodex to another and back again at least 5 times for various reasons. An every time, it's no accident that my dog's teeth are cleaner when I use this toothpaste. I can't say exactly why, but I can tell you what I see.

I also recommend you use the standard double ended pet toothbrush that's sold in a bundle with this toothpaste (Petrodex Dental Kit For Dogs), NOT the three headed toothbrush (The Better Pet Toothbrush and Toothpaste; see my review there for an explanation).

Overall though, if you're not going to be brushing your dogs teeth every day (minus a day here or there), don't expect miracles even with this toothpaste. Imagine if you brushed your teeth every now and then!

Also, make sure to massage the gums with the brush, especially around the area where they meet the teeth, as this will help solidify the area, and minimize any cracks where bacteria can seep through and cause gingivitis and even heart disease! If you notice that the toothbrush is pink after you've brushed your dog's teeth, that means that their gums are still weak and will require some gentle massaging until the pink subsides.

Have fun!

My Chihuahua loves this stuff so much he hops up onto the couch, waiting for his brushing, when he sees me get the tube. I've tried other toothpastes but this is by far the very best I've ever used because my dog doesn't resist the brushing at all. Even my cats like it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brushing made easy, November 6, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My dog loves petrodex. Comes right away when called to get her teeth brushed and hangs in for the whole time even though I can tell she is not real happy about the brushing part. It's the paste. Tried another "natural" brand but her teeth became yellowed and it was scary that it happened so quickly. Switched back to Petrodex for good.

This is an excellent product. My kitties like it and it's good for their teeth. The seller - Dogs 4u - gets the 5 Star Award for Chiseler of the Year. I intended to order 3 tubes. The seller allowed only 1 tube per order. Amazon advertises it at $4.99 with free shipping. Dogs 4u. charged
me $6.99 for the tube of toothpaste plus $9 for shipping it! $16 for a $5 item. Whoa! I doubt Amazon knows this is happening, but I know it now and Dogs 4u has the last dollar they will get from me. I hope they had a Merry Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars OK for a Difficult Dog, November 30, 2011

First, I can't say if it's helping with plaque, will have to wait till next trip to the vet. Second, it HAS helped with dog breath. How using a poultry flavored toothpaste can make a dog's breath smell good is beyond me. Third, I'm a vegetarian and was worried that this toothpaste would be hard for me to deal with, but the scent is very mild and not a problem.

My dog is a rescue and does not want anyone in her mouth. Plus she's a small dog with a deep narrow jaw. I have tried a baby toothbrush, gauze wrapped around my finger, no toothpaste, and Denta Clean Herbal Pet Toothpaste. It was always a struggle and I soon gave up.

She definitely likes the taste of this toothpaste and will come to get her teeth brushed, albeit somewhat reluctantly. I let her lick a little off my finger before I start "brushing." I am using a cotton glove that is sold in cosmetic departments to use when you put cream on your hands overnight. I dampen the fingers, put a dab of toothpaste on the tip of the index finger and work my finger in there to her back teeth. I put on another dab to do the other side. Then I let her lick off any remaining toothpaste. And then I give her a treat--maybe not the best idea--but hey, she's a dog.

I've tried several different kinds of toothpaste for my dog that I adopted and he hasn't liked any of them. But this one he likes!! He Loves it and will lick it off my finger.. Now the training begins to get him accustomed to the toothbrush which will be much easier that he likes the toothpaste!!

My dogs hate to have their teeth brushed on principle, but they love Petrodex, so will put up with the brushing. I'm not sure how it compares to other products as far as plaque removal, but in this situation it gets the job done, and that's the bottom line!

My miniture Dachshund Xeena loves this paste and has for years. This product is way overpriced in retail pet stores but has been more affordably priced on-line. Now, if we can get the shipping cost to a reasonable amount, maybe I would brush her teeth three times a day.
