Great when it works, very fragile plastic, July 28, 2007

We have a howling Chihuahua. He barks at everything that sounds like a stranger. The first time we bought this collar it worked a good 4 months. The case cracked, and lost a big chunk of the plastic holding the battery. The battery stopped making contact. We still used the collar for about a month after it was no longer functioning, and the dog was still pretty good about not barking. But he started doing it more and more, so we bought another one.
The second one we bought was a different story. Out of the box, it just did not seem as sensitive. I could not make it spray (barking like a dog close to the sensor). The first one was real sensitive. Thinking it was the battery, I put a different battery in and the case cracked; same place as the first one. The battery cap is this heavy-duty hunk of threaded metal (about the size of five stacked dimes, slightly smaller in diameter) with a rubber o-ring gasket. It just seems you need to make it tighter. Anyway, superglue works, hot glue gun doesn't on this plastic... It's now been about three months since we've had a functioning collar, and the dog is back to howling.
The ultrasonics/beepers don't work, and my wife refuses to consider the shockers. OK I'm breaking down and buying this one more time. This time I won't break it.
What I have learned:
Pros:
Citronella is very effective with my dogs.
Battery indicator is effective (slow flashing led)
Low spray indicatory is effective (fast flashing led)
Refill is easy
The unit is surprisingly small, and fits a medium-sized Chihuahua.
Cons:
These suckers are expensive, and don't last long.
The plastic looks rugged, but is very brittle. Be very careful tightening the battery cap.
There is no sensitivity adjustment.
6-volt batteries are expensive (Come on! This has got to be a conspiracy. How about using something rechargeable?)
1 star for quality/expense
5 star for effectiveness

Update 9/30/2007:
We bought two more when I wrote the review (and I didn't break them this time). It's been about two months, and one of them no longer holds the citronella. It cracked in the back, and the citronella visibly leaks out when we try to refill it, probably because our dog scratches it with hiss hind leg frequently. The other is cracked pretty good but still functioning. In general their poor quality plastic ruins what could be an excellent product. I'd downgrade my review to 1-star if amazon would let me. This is just too expensive at $69 for something that lasts a couple months if that...

No problems so far, dog has drastically reduced barking, February 8, 2008

We have a 70 pound Coonhound that loves to bark at everyone going by. Apparently, as the neighbors informed us, she especially loved to bark when we weren't home. We tried the ultrasonic bark control that looked like a bird house, but she didn't care about the noise it made and kept on barking. (Even worse, it freaked our other dog out and he started acting really strange.) We only wanted to use a shock collar as a last resort, so we decided to try this despite the poor reviews. We have been using this for a week with no problems yet. We have noticed a big change. She now runs outside when she hears something and runs around like before, but she won't bark!! I think for hounds that are extremely sensitive to smells this is a great option. We are very satisfied and would buy another one if we needed to.

This is a very effective bark collar. It worked immediately for us. I just put it on our dog, let her outside, she began to bark, then stopped immediately. I like it better than the ones that shock because I feel that it is much more humane. It uses the spray of an unpleasant odor rather than the pain of a shock.
