Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up-This book covers a fascinating aspect of the war. Sarah Emma Edmonds, disguised as Franklin Thompson, volunteered as a nurse and then became a Federal spy who traveled into the South on numerous missions, using a variety of disguises. Belle Boyd was a well-educated debutante who became a Confederate operative. Caravantes dedicates about 15 pages to each individual, focusing on her clandestine activities but also touching on her life before and after the war. A black-and-white photo or illustration of each figure completes this readable book.

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. This collective biography spotlights six women who spied for their countries during the Civil War: Sarah Emma Edmonds, Pauline Cushman, and Elizabeth Van Lew for the Union, and Belle Boyd, Rose O'Neal Greenhow, and Belle Edmondson for the Confederacy. Their action-packed stories include daring escapes, clever disguises, feigned madness, and sometimes, foiled plans. Photographs of people and places mentioned will help young readers envision the women and their surroundings. Source notes, a glossary, and a bibliography are appended. Carolyn Phelan

This review is from: Petticoat Spies: Six Women Spies of the Civil War (Notable Americans) (Library Binding)
Peggy Caravantes' Petticoat Spies details the lives of six women spies of the Civil War, telling of women who found unusual ways to participate in the war on both Confederate and Union sides. Descriptions and events read like fiction with high drama, but are based on facts. Both will intrigue middleschool level readers.
