5.0 out of 5 stars Low price, high satisfaction
I found the lens on Amazon after not having any success at a local REI. The red lens does exactly what it is supposed to do: reduces strain on the eyes (on yourself and others) for night vision. I read several other comments about the light not being "red" enough, but I am not hung up on this characteristic of the lens. Truthfully, it is not red, but it is still pleasing...

1.0 out of 5 stars Incovenient & not really red
As the other review mentions, the "red" filter really isn't. It's closer to orange & didn't seem to do much at all for night vision. The filters are not very easy to swap out but are easy to lose.

If you're looking for that capability & happened to purchase a Petzl headlamp w/o the flip-down or permanent REAL red filter, I guess this is an acceptable cheap...

If you're looking for that capability & happened to purchase a Petzl headlamp w/o the flip-down or permanent REAL red filter, I guess this is an acceptable cheap substitute. A better option is to return your other headlamp & buy the other model, which is available on here. It costs about the same as purchasing another model plus these filters.

Princeton Tec also makes good headlamps (incl waterproof models) but there aren't many listed on here & I don't know if they offer red-light filters.

2.0 out of 5 stars More fun than practical., April 30, 2008

First, a small disclaimer; I'm not an outdoors type person. I have a headlamp purely for fun.

I bought this with the savings on the headlamp. The lens filters are constructed with the same high quality standards as all Petzl products.

However, the red filter is a very mild red. To me, it almost looks more like a darker orange than a full red. In fact, when the headlamp is on, it casts an orange light with the middle of the beam (almost) a pink (from the mixing of the bluish light from the headlamp and the filter). I'm guessing Petzl used a lighter red to keep the brightness of the headlamp up, but I would have much preferred to have less light and a darker red.

I didn't spend as much time with the green filter, but I will note that it has a slight teal tint to it.

As far as the purpose of having a red filter to help preserve your night-vision, I can't say that I noticed any benefit to installing the red (or the green) filter.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful but not perfect, December 2, 2008
This review is from: Petzl E44850 Tikka/Zipka 3-Lens Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
These lenses are very hard to pop-in and out of my petzelLED headlamps, I almost thought I was going to break them at first.

The colors are nowhere near as pure as having colored LEDs, but seem to do the trick never the less.

Only problem I seem to have is misplacing the clear lens I took out when I put a colored one in.

It is very useful in situations where whatever you are looking at is in close proximity. I personally use it to read books either in bed or in the bag. I have not used the green or clear, so I cannot comment on those (but would expect similar results).

I thought my kids would think these different colored lenses for their headlamps were cool.... so much for my thinking! They're a nice quality, but the kids could care less about changing the color... they want the light at night!!!
