5.0 out of 5 stars Hiking - backpacking - camping & more - very useful
I have owned many Petzl headlamps, but this one is by far the best I have owned & used. Three easily found AAA batteries power this "lite" (weighs only 95g [3.35oz] including the batteries!) light and there is a nifty Green Orange Red indicator light on the side to help you determine how much battery life is left. New/fresh batteries & the indicator blinks green. After...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Not great
i got the sand colored one but other than that its the same light. Many reviewers said that is was a supper bright light. well it is but only in turbo mode and for that you must keep your finger on the button (cant let go). The low light is good for reading especially with the diffuser on (i keep the white on the light and the red in the clip). the high is good for...

After about 70% used/discharged the indicator turns orange. Finally, Red when 90% used and they need to be replaced. As an additional alert, the headlamp's beam will blink momentarily when the indicator changes color. Speaking of batteries, I checked out Petzl USA Homepage and there is now a warning not to use Lithium batteries (especially their higher output during discharge) because they may cause the lamp to overheat and possibly damage the LEDs. There is a very functional light diffuser that allows the light to be spread; perfect for walking at night through the woods with a full pack on, or with the diffuser moved to the side, a pin point beam can be directed where you need the brightest of lighting. Battery life for the 3 lighting levels: maximum [60 hours], optimum [80 hours], economic, [120 hours] Water resistant for all-weather use. Buy this headlamp & you will not be disappointed.

Got 4 of them, 2 in the autos, one in the tool chest, and one just laying around.
What I like about this model is the tilting head beam that stays locked. LED light just bright enough but not blinding, great battery life.
I use them for everything. Taking out the garbage at night, walking or jogging, changing the oil filter, working on electronics, power outage, attic.
Comfortable and light to wear, adjustable light power with a stobe option.
And you are nuts to go camping without these, you can even signal w/ them.

I've been wanting a light like this for awhile and finally took the plunge. The Petzl has several different models, but this one looked like the best combination of features and price.
It's been used many times and works great. Not a high penetration beam, but the LED has a blue light which seems more white than the standard tungsten lights. The headlight is very useful for jobs that require your hands free. I use it to clean my sensor on my digital camera and photography shots at night. Reading is very convenient with this type of light too!!

I live in the boonies and this thing is great for finding firewood at night or taking the trash out to the road on trash night. I've had other Petzl headlamps before (lost it) and this one is a big improvement. The narrow beam gives a long distance illumination and the wide beam easily covers any close in space. Those features are new and worth the upgrade price. Get one for you and keep a few around for when you don't know what to get someone for a gift. It makes a great gift because everyone needs one. Even folks who rarely use a flashlight will appreciate the fact that, due to long battery life and led bulbs, this light will always work, even if it has been left in a drawer for a year.

What can I say that hasn't been said already? I have the Petzl tikka plus (which I really like) but I have to say the XP is head and shoulders above even that outstanding unit. REALLY bright with the high setting and blinding with the boost mode. Great diffuser, high quality construction, nice tilt mechanism. Useful for so many things (i even used mine to paint a dimly-lit area of my apartment!) Hard to believe we used to lug around 3 D-cell maglights...

I purchased 8 of these headlamps. In addition, I have used it previously. We conduct mammal research in Colima, Mexico, including extensive work with bats. These headlamps are excellent. They provide good light, with options for a narrow beam and a wide beam. They also allow for different light intensities. The thing I have been most impressed by is that they use very little power and the AAA batteries last a very long time. This is a standard item for our field crews.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Boys/Men love them, January 10, 2008

I purchased 4 of these for stocking stuffers. Christmas morning all 4 men (ages 25 -63) put them on immediately. I wish I had taken a picture - all in pajamas and wearing their headlamps. Since then, my husband has thanked me many times. He uses his while walking the dogs at night and working on a project in his workshop, fixing the lawnmower etc. I wish I had thought of getting these sooner. The light is very bright and the batteries have lasted well so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY USEFUL!, June 14, 2008
This review is from: Petzl E86 PR Tikka XP Headlamp, Red (Tools & Home Improvement)
These headlamps are really worth the $$ if you use flashlights a lot. It is really convenient to have a hands-free flashlight, something you don't really realize until you use one of these things. We use ours as reading lights when we are camping. This particular model has three brightness settings, which is perfect: Go all the way dim when you are reading, and all the way bright when you have to get up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. The lamp portion has a tilt down feature as well, which your friends will appreciate if you accidentally look at them while it is on (the light is blinding but only if you look at it straight on). It also has a strobe for emergencies. Battery lasts a long time, and the head strap is so comfortable, you barely notice it is on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bright Light, September 20, 2008

Headlamps come in many shapes and forms. The Tikka XP is a bright, light weight headlamp. I like the feature of having a diffuser that slides over the spotlight. If you can find them, purchase the colored diffusers. I replaced the clear one that came with the Tikka XP, with a red diffuser. This is a great feature at night as it allows you to see your surrounding clearly, without significantly impacting your night vision.

Please note: if you intend on using this with a bike, do not use the red diffuser, because the light is limited to about 10 feet.
