5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic headlamp
I *love* this headlamp. I bought it specifically for nighttime trail running and it definitely does the job. It's amazingly bright at it's highest setting; I'm able to run nearly as fast in full dark as I do during the day. It takes 3 AA batteries so it's not as light as some lamps, but with the battery pack in the back it balances well on your head. I don't have any...

2.0 out of 5 stars BETTER HEADLAMPS AVAILABLE FOR LESS
I used this headlamp for an ill advised 20 mile hike from the summit of MT Lemmon to Sabino Canyon. The head lamp is poorly constructed. The water proof claim could not withstand 4 hours of sweating in the AZ heat. The battery case is closed by a cheaply made "snap-on" tupperware type rubber cover. Apparently I did not snap the cover on completely. I must have knocked it...

I don't have any problems with the comfort, and I'm notoriously picky about anything on my head.

As another review mentioned, the controls are tiny so it's not that easy to toggle it with gloves on. Once you get used to the placement it's not too bad though. And for me this quirk is minor given how well the unit performs.

If you need a *very* bright headlamp that is comfortable and lightweight enough for active sports this is the product for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars No regrets yet, January 25, 2010

After some deliberation about the cost of this product and the weight of the 3 AA battery pack I went ahead and purchased it. I have been using the lamp for about 4 months in several situations. During an 8 hour hike at night the lamp was sufficiently bright at its lowest setting. I had no comfort issues and the weight of the battery pack was no problem. Contrary to some pictures the light did include a center head strap for a more secure fit. Another reviewer somewhere mentioned that the lamp leaves a shadow just in front of the feet. This is the case but it can be reduced with increased downward angle of the light trading off some forward vision. For me it did not negatively affect hiking even on treacherous terrain. I am also using the lamp for reading in bed. One can shift the lamp such that the battery pack is not in the way when one lies on a pillow. The lamp is also working well for uses around the house and yard but probably any light would do well. The switch that is subject of some criticism causes no issues for me. Turning it on the first few times seemed a little cumbersome but the switch quickly becomes a non-issue unless one has to operate it with gloves. In fact I prefer this design since it is much less likely that the light turns on inadvertently in a backpack or in a suitcase like a different lamp did that I used to own. The light can be angled back for transportation in which position the switch is well protected. I really like the programmability to find an optimum between light output and battery life for different uses.

I love this headlamp. Nice and light, batteries last a long time, the diffuser is great, I could go on for a long time with these compliments. I have two minor notes on things I would like to see improved. First, the on/off button is small and pointy, it takes some time to get used to it. Also, the tilt feature is very rough, I have used other headlamps that have had much better on/off buttons and swiviled up and down much nicer. Those are minor issues compared with the rest of the great features and all the light this lamp produces.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best out there in this price range and most other price ranges..., August 10, 2011

Let me address some of the concerns that I saw from other reviewers before purchasing this.

Water resistant to IPX-4 standard: As far as I can tell, it is. I don't know what the other complaints are about. I sweat like a pig when I run and I ran for two hours this morning (August in Texas), and experienced no problems.

Weight - This is a really light piece of equipment. The light itself seems to weigh almost nothing and the pack w/batteries in is situated on the back of the head in such a way that I didn't even notice it. Even as the sun came up, I just went ahead and left the light on my head because it was so unobtrusive.

As far as other things I noticed:

Very easy to program. The instructions are clear and given in both picture and word format.

Extremely versatile light range. Although 1 (the lowest setting) is probably bright enough for most things, the other settings are excellent for running trails. I like a lot of light, so I go with 8 on the trails.

Additionally, levels 1-8 are regulated, whereas 9 and 10 or not. Still, I think you would have to be nearly blind to need those two settings.

My only concern is that I emailed Petzl immediately after ordering this item requesting warranty information and they never got back to me.

Overall, despite bad customer service, this is an outstanding product.

This light met all expectations. You can cut grass at night with this light. I can't wait to go hiking and caving with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Work Wonders!, July 22, 2011

I've own three Black Diamonds and they all seem to fail after about 1-2 years of usage, I finally decided to try Petzl's headlamp and so far I've very happy with my purchase. I chose this one after a friend recommended me to it and I had a chance to demo his, and it was pretty amazingly bright! I've had a chance to use it a few time hiking around in the dark and it works very well especially having the option of changing from diffused to spot beam. Since its been pretty useful, I've been carrying it around my regular work backpack and is convenient when I need to look for items in dark places. Highly recommended!

First of all about 10 or 12 years ago I bought a PETZL Duo and white LEDs had not even made it to the market place yet. It used standard light bulbs. About 4 or 5 years ago PETZL came out with the option of adding LEDs to the Duo I had and it was great. Much better battery life and great light output. Unfortunately one of the batteries leaked pretty bad and pretty much ruined the inside of the battery pack. Knowing how well the light was built and that it may have latest a lot longer if the battery leak did not occur I did not look anywhere else but PETZL.

The MYO RXP is amazingly bright from just 1 LED! It even comes with a warning not to look at the light directly.

The day I received the headlight we had a party the next day and a rain storm coming in the next morning so I had to mow the lawn and it was already dark. No problem, I just put on the light and flipped down the wide angle diffuser and was able to mow the lawn just fine in the dark.

Hopefully this light will give me 10+ years of service and I think I am going to use the Lithium batteries and hopefully in storage they will not leak and should last longer.

I wish this light had the red LED since I do outdoor photography but the lowest setting is pretty dim and should work fine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Insanely bright but has a bad shadow on spot, October 13, 2010
This review is from: Petzl E87 P MYO RXP Headlamp (Tools & Home Improvement)
I wear the light for running during the night. I have used it about a dozen times and it is incredibly bright. On level. It has 3 programmable light setting plus one blinking (SOS) setting.

You can chose between 10 lighting levels to set the 3 programmable light setting. I have mine set at 8, 6, & 4. 4 is still brighter than my Petxl XP.

I do not use the over head strap and I have no problem with it sliding down on my head during a run. Longest run with it on my head was 13 miles with no problem.

Only complaint is that it casts an annoying shadow in front of you when you have it on spot light. Almost as if you were wearing it with a baseball cap. If you want a really, really bright head light, get it.
